• There were different types of slaves: Chattel slavery: slaves who belonged to the
owner as property/assets and could be bought or sold by the owner.
• House slave: works mainly in the house and is also regarded as property that may
be sold, although this did not happen often.
• Bonded slave: a person who is a slave until his/her debt was worked off.
• Military slaves: slaves who are trained to serve as soldiers.

G07 ~ Social Sciences P1/2: History

DESCRIBE: At least FOUR of the following:

• After the slaves were captured in the interior, they were taken to the West Coast and
kept in captivity in forts that were known as factories.
• The slaves were shipped to America on cargo ships that were especially converted
to accommodate slaves.
• The slaves were chained to one another on wooden beds, in the ship’s hold, which
allowed them almost no movement. Large numbers of slaves were transported at a
time, which resulted in dehydration and breakouts of diarrhoea and scurvy.
• It is estimated that about 15% of the slaves died during these journeys.
• When the slaves arrived, they were first inspected by the prospective buyers. Their
mouths were opened to look at their teeth, and they had to walk up and down and
bend so that the buyers could check for any disabilities.
• The slaves were then placed in slave quarters where they were washed and had oil
or fat or even tar rubbed onto their skins to make them appear healthy. This ensured
higher selling prices.
• They were then branded with an iron so that they would be recognised as slaves.
• Slaves had to work on plantations, in households – they had no freedom and no
rights.
(Any relevant answer.)
