Background

St. Ignatius’ 40-year-old

fluorescent lighting

system was failing,

and much of the

architectural detail of

the ornate domed

ceiling, oculus, and

supporting structures

were lost from

window glare and

inadequate lighting.

The Challenge
As part of an integrated facility-wide lighting upgrade, the beauty of the ceiling details was to be brought out
and enhanced through color-changing fixtures. With no dedicated technical church staff, the solution needed to
be low maintenance. Since payment of utility bills was being transitioned over to the church, an energy-efficient
solution was required.

The Solution
Various technologies were investigated to achieve color-changing capabilities, but Alan Lindsley, principal at
Lindsley Architectural Lighting, was displeased with the complexity of the equipment and the power needed to
project saturated colors over the required throw distances – until he tried out ETC's Selador LED fixtures.

“We tried a Selador fixture and discovered it did a great job of meeting the design parameters. The decrease in
complexity was also a benefit to the church to keep maintenance requirements minimal.” And due to Selador's
unique seven-color LED design, the fixtures were able to match the color temperature of existing lighting – a
distinguishing feature of the Selador fixtures.

Lindsley continues, “When we started conceptualizing the application of color to the nave and sanctuary, we
wanted the ability to highlight the columns, the ribs around the oculus, and the proscenium arch. This required
a wide variety of beam spreads in two axes, and the Selador units provide a wide range of lenses to meet the
designer's needs. We ended up with one two-foot unit per column and rib with two high-power units at the
spring points of the proscenium arch.” ETC Unison® architectural dimming with LCD control panels provide
centralized control over the lighting system.

“The Selador units met and exceeded our hopes for a low-maintenance, efficient, robust,
color-changing instrument,” states Lindsley. “The congregation was overwhelmed at the
change in the worship experience, and the church management was pleased by the ability
to change the look of the sanctuary from one location.”
Selador Series LED fixtures by ETC
The genius behind the Selador Series is the x7 Color System™, which combines seven LED colors

Compared to conventional LED fixtures that use just three or four colors, the Selador Series
produces a broader, richer spectrum of whites and a more dazzling, nearly limitless color palette.
The unique seven-color system gives natural color to people and objects, making the Selador
Series the only LED luminaires capable of interacting seamlessly with conventional light sources.

There’s a Selador fixture for any installation…
