Global Pre-Reflection

1. What do you hope to learn and what are your expectations for the Poverty, Disaster

Preparedness and COVID-19 Community Response simulations? I hope to learn how I

can make a difference in those communities that are living in poverty. I personally hate to

hear stories about families living in poverty and not having access to necessary resources

such as healthcare, quality food, and just simple necessities. I think that having those who

have way more than necessary and leaving those who don’t even have the bare minimum

to suffer is inhumane. In a time like now, I believe every person should have adequate

healthcare resources accessible to them to contain COVID. Disaster preparedness is

extremely essential as well and even as an adult, I personally don’t feel prepared if a

disaster may strike. I look forward to learning more about how to be prepared just in case

something was to happen in my area so I can share that information with my families and

friends in surrounding areas. Although this is such an important topic, I believe it is

overlooked in most communities. When it comes to COVID, I believe everyone has

gathered their own information and their opinions and choose to believe what they want,

but I want to know the truth. I want a nonbiased explanation of COVID and how the

communities can survive this pandemic.

2. What stereotypes/myths/biases do you have about vulnerable populations? Some things

that I have been taught about vulnerable populations is that is primarily Latino Americans
and African Americans who are living in poverty and are uninsured. I have also heard

bizarre things like most of the population who have HIV are gay men which could be

true, but people believe that they are also the only population who are at risk and that is a

myth. I have heard that Latino Americans and African Americans are the individuals that

receive the most benefits from the state like food stamps or housing benefits. Individuals

also believe those with chronic comorbidities are only due to modify about risk factors

and that it is completely the individual’s fault that they are sick, which is not true.

3. How can you apply and integrate your knowledge to be of service to this population as a

future registered nurse? I could apply and integrate my knowledge to help those who are

at risk for this illness early on and focus on prevention for those who have not been

affected just yet. I hope to be able to provide connections to the appropriate resources

needed for an individual that may not have accessibility to certain health resources and

provide them with healthy food options and how to attain the foods necessary despite

their situation. By acquiring the knowledge on resources available I can share all the

information that has been shared with me.
