Name of Activity: Straighten String

Originating Idea: Children will attempt to make their string as straight as possible on their paper using
fine motor skills.

Materials
Yarn, glue, paper

Appropriate Age group: 1-2

Beginning of Activity
"Today we are going to work with yarn. Yarn moves very easily and can be tough to control so today we
are going to attempt to make the yarn into as straight of a line as we can. I will start by giving you some
paper with glue on it. You will place your string of yarn onto the paper and straighten it out as much as
you can before the glue dries.”
Middle of Activity

Early: Children in earlier developmental ability will only need to successfully place their string onto the paper
and glue it down.

Middle: Children at the middle developmental ability will need to try at making their yarn straight onto
the paper before the glue dries.

Later: Children at a later developmental ability will make their yarn straight on the paper with minimal glue
moved and adjusted on their paper. They will be able to use more than one string of yarn for multiple

“Everyone was able to move yarn with their hands to make the string as straight as they could. We are now
going to hang our papers up onto the wall for everyone to see. After we get them hung up, we will wash the
glue off our hands and head to the carpet for a story.”

Follow-up Ideas
This activity can be continued by offering more materials instead of just yarn such as markers or paint
to explore art materials within the creative arts kdi.
