Name of Activity: Don’t Drop the Ball

Originating Idea: Children will work as a group on moving objects by passing the ball around the carpet
without dropping it.

Curriculum Area
C. Physical Development and Health

Materials
Balls of varied sizes

Appropriate Age group: 1-2

Beginning of Activity
"Today we are going to be moving multiple balls from one side of the carpet to the other without it
touching the carpet” The children will all spread out on the carpet and hold their hands out for the ball
as it gets passed from one side to the other. It will start with the adult who will hand the ball to the closest
student. Once it makes it to the other side, the adult can introduce other sized balls to pass along.

Middle of Activity

Early: Children in earlier developmental ability will stand on the carpet and may drop the ball when handed to
them or when passing it to another student. We will count how many times the ball hits the ground and can
work on improving it with a better score each time we try.

Middle: Children at the middle developmental ability will stand on the carpet spread out and pass the
ball from person to person successfully to the other side without it touching the floor.

Later: Children at a later developmental ability can be more spread out and try tossing the ball underhand from
person to person.

End of Activity
“We were able to get all of the balls across to the other side of the carpet! We used teamwork to move the balls
successfully. We will now collect all the bigger balls we used to bring outside with us.”

Follow-up Ideas
This activity can be continued by having children speak when passing the ball from one person to
another to incorporate listening and responding within the communication, language, and literacy kdi.
