Name of Activity: Fit the Ball

Originating Idea: Children will solve problems by trying to get balls into a box that has different sized
holes.

Curriculum Area
A. Approaches to Learning

Materials
Different sized balls and a box with holes in it.

Appropriate Age group: 6-12 months

Beginning of Activity
I will begin by laying the balls out in front of the children and placing the box in the middle. I will give
the children an example of myself putting balls into the box then they will begin putting their balls into
the box through the holes.

Middle of Activity

Early: Children in earlier developmental ability can just play with the balls and box even if they are unable to
successfully get the balls into the box.

Middle: Children at the middle developmental ability can place at least one ball into one of the holes
successfully.

Later: Children at a later developmental ability will need to get all the balls into the box through any holes.

End of Activity
“We were able solve the problem on how to fit the balls into the box all on our own! I am now going to put the
balls back into our correct baskets so we can move on!”

Follow-up Ideas
This activity can be continued by having the children hold the balls and practice throwing and rolling
them on the carpet with the physical development and health kdi.
