Discussion

Universal healthcare is an essential system that provides citizens with quality medical

services. The government offers it to everybody regardless of their ability to pay for medical

services. In the US, there is Medicare and Medicaid, whereby Medicaid is meant to provide

health care to all those below the income level while Medicare covers citizens who are over 65

years and have paid (Niles, 2019).

The WHO has been advocating for Universal healthcare since the year 1948. The United

States has been complying over the last few decades, and several countries have learned from

them (Gray & Jani, 2016). Countries have different ways of delivering health services to their

citizens. However, by looking up to the countries like the United States, there are several things

that these countries can and have learned from US universal healthcare coverage;

With universal health care in place, countries have learned a way of lowering health care

costs for the economy. The government controls the prices of medication and medical services

through regulation and negotiation (Gerard, 2018).

Countries have also learned that through universal healthcare, they will be able to create a

healthier workforce. They have learned that preventive care largely reduces the need for

expensive emergencies (Kumar & Maskara, 2015).

Another important lesson that other countries have learned from the US is that universal

healthcare administrative costs can be eliminated. The problem of dealing with several and

different private health insurers is dealt with (Schneider & Squires, 2017).

Health care costs can overwhelm the budgets of governments. Therefore, as countries

learn this, they should have strategies of preventing the same problem from repeating itself.

Universal healthcare might not cover rare conditions; the government might limit some

services as it tries to cut costs. Other countries have learned this, but they can do things

differently.
