This lesson is part of The Best Of Me curriculum which aligns with CASEL’s five
areas of core competence for social emotional learning.

My Objective

Students will be able to recognize positive choices they can make when they feel
angry.

I Will do this by
providing an engaging game to help students practice distinguishing between
positive and negative calm down choices.

It is important because
teaching students positive calm down strategies will give them the tools they
need to cope when they feel angry.

1. Print and laminate (optional) the thumbs up and the thumbs down(next page)
enough for a class set or small group. You can either have the students hold the
thumbs up in the air when playing the game or you can put them on popsicle sticks.
These thumbs are used in all of The Best Of Me curriculum social stories so you will
only need to prep them once!

2. Read the social story to students (it can be used as a PDF for digital devices or
you can print it out). As you read each page students will decide if they should
show you the “thumbs up” or the ”thumbs down” card. For an easier option
students can use their own thumbs to put up or down but I find that often times
my students LOVE holding something.

Print and complete 1 or 2 of the activities at the end of the story. One activity will
3. require drawing tools and scissors (students will cut apart the book, put it back
together and color it). The second activity will require only drawing tools.

4. Complete the transition activity and embed the extended learning idea
causally throughout your week.

5. Have fun!

I can make positive choices when I feel angry.
It is okay to feel angry sometimes, but when you feel angry you
need to find positive ways to calm down to help yourself feel
better. When you feel angry, it is not okay to hurt other people,
throw things or scream and yell. Those negative choices will not
help you calm down.
