Banksy

Banksy is an enigmatic street artist whose name is unknown. There are a lot of versions what is his real
identity. Some people claim that he is Robert Banks, while others believe that he’s Robin Gunningham, who
was born in Bristol in 1973. A popular rumor is that he was a butcher before becoming an artist. However,
Banksy has never confirmed or denied any of the assumptions since he avoids being arrested. That’s why
we don’t know much about his background.

His graffiti art became popular in the 1990s. He started with traditional painting but then decided to use
stencils and spray cans to speed up the process. Banksy travels and does his paintings all over the world.
There are several of his murals in our homeland, Ukraine.

All of his paintings are posted on his website, so people always know if it is real Banksy or just a copycat.
Banksy’s paintings aim to challenge society. His arts draw our attention to various problems, such as
environmental collapse or bad treatment of animals, wars, etc. For instance, there is a mural of a boy
catching snowflakes in his mouth. But if we look closer, we’ll see that it’s not a snowflake but ash. The
message of murals is sometimes not obvious, but it always makes you think.
