CE 36500 – Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering

Fall-2005 Computer Lab: #3 Due Date: 12/13/2005 (2.00 PM)

Problem statement:
You have to draw a sever network system using SEWERCAD software for a small commercial and
residential area having facilities such as: shopping center, school, hospital, coffee shops, hotel,
bar, and apartment buildings. The loading units for these facilities are shown in figure below.
The load (sewage) generated from these facilities are collected by gravity into the manholes MH-
1 and MH-2. The infiltration rate of 15 L/d per meter of pipe has been considered in the system.
The sewage from manholes flows by circular gravity pipe to the wet well (WW-1) and then
pumped to the Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment through junction (J-1). The detailed
information of the system is given in next page.

Answer the following question and discussed in results section of lab report:
• What is the total sanitary flow (dry weather flow) exiting the system? What is the total flow?
• Does the pump have adequate capacity for this system? How can you tell?
• What is the full flow capacity of the gravity pipe P-1? How much is this capacity being
exceeded?
• Convert the data into 24-hour diurnal pattern (Average daily flows to hourly flows) using
multiplier given in book (Computer application in Hydraulic engineering, pp. 266), and report
what time maximum rate of pumping occurs?
Base load (liter/day) for facilities:

Hospital (Medical) Bed 650
School (Large) Student 80
Hotel Employee 40
Bar Customer 8
Shopping center Employee 40

The report you will submit should contain the following sections:

1. Cover page: Giving title, group name, and dates etc.

2. Abstract: Summarizing the report (approx. 150 words)
3. Introduction: Describing the basic elements in sewer design. Write (define) the all terms
you came across during solving the labs. (1-3 pages).
4. Procedure: Including figures and/or tables (1-3 pages)
5. Results and Discussion: Giving analysis and interpretation of results (1-3 pages).

Report should be in font 12 size, 1.5 line spacing and paragraph justified. Page Margin all
side 1 inch. Figures and tables should be numbered and must have captions explaining what
the figures and tables are illustrating.
