Assessment
Before transferring a client assess the following:
-The client body size, ability to follow instructions, ability to bear weight, ability to position/reposition feet
on the floor
-Ability to push down with arms and lean forward, ability to achieve independent sitting balance

-Activity tolerance, muscle strength, joint mobility, presence of paralysis, level of comfort

-The space in which the transfer will need to be moved

-The number of assistants (one or two)needed to accomplish the transfer safely

Preparation
-Review the client record to determine if previous nurses have recorded information about patients ability to
transfer
-Prepare the equipment (transfer belt/gait belt, wheelchair, non-skid shoes, robe if necessary or appropriate
clothing
-Check if the equipment is functioning correctly

-Make sure there is no spill or liquids on the floor on which client could slip

-Remove or put aside any obstacle (table, chairs)
