Client transferring
Assessment
Before transferring a client assess the following:
-The client body size, ability to follow instructions, ability to bear weight, ability to position/reposition feet
on the floor
-Ability to push down with arms and lean forward, ability to achieve independent sitting balance
-Activity tolerance, muscle strength, joint mobility, presence of paralysis, level of comfort
Preparation
-Review the client record to determine if previous nurses have recorded information about patients ability to
transfer
-Prepare the equipment (transfer belt/gait belt, wheelchair, non-skid shoes, robe if necessary or appropriate
clothing
-Check if the equipment is functioning correctly
-Make sure there is no spill or liquids on the floor on which client could slip
