IGNITION SYSTEM PRACTICAL

Remember to note down your findings

1.Identify all the components that make up the coil ignition system.

2.Overhaul of Distributor

i. Label all the leads to the spark plug for quick reconnection and to avoid mixing them
up.
ii. Remove the cap and inspect both the cap and rotor.
iii. Check the contact points for burning , proper mating and wear.
iv. Check if the retaining springs are connected to their pins
v. Check cam for wear.
vi. Check on the lubrication at the distributor. Check the grease can.
vii. Remove dirt from the cap
viii. Check the cap for any cracks.
ix. Inspect the HTL for arcing marks. Use a sand paper to clean if marks present.
x. Check the plastic cover of the HTL for any cracks
xi. Check vacuum advance lead for any disconnections
xii. Replace back the components of the distributor

3. Spark plugs

i. Check for the following:-

 Loose plug – damaged due to severe overheating.

 Eroded electrodes:- due to continuous overheating
 Carbon deposits –
 Sooty plug – A sign of over rich mixture, resulting from an incorrectly
adjusted carburettor and excessive choke use.
 Worn plug
 Oiled plug - shows piston rings are worn out and sticking valves
 Sound Plug – clean and light brown (it is in better condition)

ii. Check the plug gap if it is the specification using a feeler gauge.

4. Condenser

This rarely fails. Check however for the earthing and other external connections.
