Clutches Computational Laboratory

1.) A cone clutch has a mean radius of 200 mm and a cone angle of 8°. Maximum
lining pressure is 0.7 MPa and the coefficient of friction is 0.2. If the lining measures
75 mm along an element of the cone, using uniform wear theory, determine the
following:
a.) outer and inner diameter of the cone.
b.) frictional torque the clutch can exert,
c.) engaging force required for steady operation,
d.) Frictional power for a speed of 600 rpm.

2.) A multi-disk clutch consists of two steel disks with one bronze disk. The inner and
outer diameters of the contacting surfaces are 200 and 250 mm respectively.
The coefficient of friction is 0.1 and the maximum pressure between the contacting
surfaces is limited to 0.4 MPa. Assuming uniform wear theory, determine the
following:
a.) required force to engage the clutch,
b.) torque transmitted by the clutch and
c.) the power transmitting capacity at 720 rpm.

3.) An automotive plate clutch consists of two pairs of contacting surfaces with an
asbestos friction lining. The torque transmitting capacity of the clutch is 550 N-m.
The coefficient of friction is 0.25 and the permissible intensity of pressure is 0.5 MPa.
Due to space limitations, the outer diameter of the friction disk is fixed as
250 mm. Using uniform wear theory, determine the following:
a.) inner diameter of the friction disk; and
b.) the spring force required to keep the clutch in an engaged position.
