DEBATE

A debate is a formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting in which

opposing arguments are put forward to support or oppose a given point of view.
The topic/ subject of a debate is called a motion.

How to prepare a speech for debate :

● Start with a greeting, self introduction and your point of view, ie for or against the
motion
● Gather sufficient arguments for/against the motion
● Quotations may be used
● Speak from any one point of view - either for or against [not both]
● Present correct/authentic data or information
● Ideas/reasons should be placed in emphatic language
● Provide a strong conclusion

EXAMPLE : ‘Online classes are the future of education’ As Abha/Abhay, write a debate
for or against the motion in 120-150 words .

Good Morning honourable judges, respected teachers, worthy opponents and my dear
friends, I, Abha Sharma of class 12 stand here today to speak against the motion
‘Online classes are the future of education’.
Online learning or e-learning refers to learning conducted via electronic media, that is
the internet. There is no real face-to-face interaction between the teacher and the
student. There is reduced scope for adjusting and modifying the teaching style to suit
different students. Moreover , we must accept that humans are social beings and are
more comfortable with direct instruction than virtual classes. The human touch is missing
when teachers and students are interacting just via a screen.

A major disadvantage of online education is that the student may take advantage of
the virtual environment and evade his duties as a student. Not paying attention in class,
missing classes, avoiding classroom interaction and adopting unfair means during tests
are some of the negative fallouts of virtual education. At the same time, teachers face
difficulties in judging and assessing their students. They may be unable to identify
learning problems among the students and therefore not be able to give appropriate
and timely guidance.

I think everyone will agree that attending school provides many benefits to students
which a virtual classroom does not. Following the school timetable teaches values like
punctuality and discipline while interacting with others in the physical classroom teaches
consideration, tolerance, cooperation, and social and emotional skills. Studying in a
class with many others leads to more effective learning, having a long term impact.
And let’s not forget that school is also a place for having fun ! Can a virtual classroom
ever provide the camaraderie and companionship of a real classroom, the building of
long lasting friendships, the creation of memories and experiences ? Never !

Technology came to our rescue during the pandemic and helped us to continue
education in schools and colleges but it is not a substitute for real classrooms.
In conclusion , I would like to say that no matter how fast technology developments take
place, the traditional way of learning cannot be displaced. I strongly oppose the motion
‘Online classes are the future of education’. Thank you.
