ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to determine whether our renting machine service is
needed around Malaysia. This research involves public transport users, people who love
shopping at big malls and even tourist. During the rainy seasons, people find it is a struggle to
travel from one destination to another, especially when they forget to bring along their
umbrella. Furthermore, we found out that people tend to wait for the rain to stop rather than be
wet. To examining the problems, we have conducted a survey through Google Form platform
and manage to get 120 respondents consisting of student Unikl Business School and even
public transport users. The idea of umbrella rental machine is to ease people’s journey and
protect their belongings without harming the environment. We believe that the innovation of
umbrella rental machine will make it easier for people to travel to their destination during rainy
days.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Proposal

Umbrella is a portable, hand-held device called an umbrella is used to block rain and
even sunlight. According to the history of the umbrella, different locations wore umbrellas for
various circumstances. Based on the history of umbrella, important people were shielded from
the sun in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and India. They served as a badge of honour
and authority for the wearer and were frequently huge and held by bearers. Umbrellas were
first used in Europe by the ancient Greeks as sunshades and by the Romans as a rain shield. In
Europe by the 18th century, umbrellas were widely used. a small, elegant umbrella that was a
feature of stylish women's outdoor dress and used to protect women's faces from the sun.
Midway through the 19th century, men in the west started carrying umbrellas for personal use.
At the turn of the 20th century, both men and women used umbrellas in a range of bright and
colourful styles. Since then, there are many types of umbrellas are available in the market.

Our business recently launched a brand-new service named UMBRENT. We offer an

umbrella-rental service through a vending machine called UMBRENT. We came up with this
concept because when it comes to stormy weather, like heavy rain, people frequently wait for
the storm to stop. They'll need to take their time because they don't want to get wet, and they
also want to protect their valuables. Many people will find this new service useful in easing
their travel between locations. Apart from that, our business also aims to place our machines
in a various place like, public transport hubs, big shopping malls and open areas.

1.2 Problem statement

Malaysia has an average precipitation of 3000mm. Precipitation is known as rain. Based on

Malaysia Meteorological Department Malaysia, in Malaysia we have 4 seasons which are the
northeast monsoon from November until March, the first intermonsoonal period from March
to May, the southwest monsoon from May to October, and the second intermonsoonal period
from October to November. This means that Malaysia experience rainfall often.

Despite this, not many Malaysians have the habit of carrying umbrella most of the time with
them. Due to this occurrence, we carried out a survey to proof that this statement is true.

Figure 1: Chart showing percentage of people often forget to bring their own umbrella.

According to the pie chart, 59% of our respondents agree about them often forget to bring
umbrella with them. Therefore, if they forget to bring their umbrella during rainy day, they will
need to wait for the rain to stop. Our target customer ranges from students to workers. In Kuala
Lumpur, most people utilize public transport for traveling from one place to another. Hence,
we conducted a survey on whether people wanted the machine to be available at public
transport hubs or not.

Page | 5
Figure 2: Chart showing the percentage of people opinions on having Umbrella rental
Machine in public transport hubs

According to the pie chart, 90% of the respondents agreeing on having the machines in public
transport hubs. This is because not all public transport users carry their own umbrellas
everywhere to reduce the hassle of carrying umbrella around. Thus, as a solution they can opt
for umbrella renting.

Figure 3: Chart showing the percentage of people preferred renting umbrella whenever they
have to go from place to place

Referring to the pie chart, 59% of the respondents prefer renting an umbrella. This indicates
that they knew it will be convenient for them and they knew that whenever they need an
umbrella, they just have to go to the UMBRENT machine to obtain one.

2.0 BODY

2.1 Proposed Solutions

We are serving Umbrella Renting at public transport hubs, big shopping malls and open
areas. We start with the capital city which is Kuala Lumpur because the population there was
the highest in Peninsular Malaysia and it has the most public transport hubs. This service can
help to ease people’s journey from one place to another. This service not only applicable only
when it rains but people can use our service whenever they want.

Our service will work best for them and meets the needs of our customer. This
service is available 24 hours for people to rent. Our customer service also available 24 hours
and there is no need to queue. It’s a good thing because weather in Malaysia is unpredictable.
Therefore, some of the people are not aware of the weather condition and always often forget
to bring their umbrella.
This service aims to help those who struggle in the rain. It also reduces the practice of
purchasing cheap umbrellas and throw them away when they break. UMBRENT is designed
to offer an environmentally friendly alternative to mass-produced umbrellas. This will help the
world to have a lower umbrella waste, that is super hard to dispose. Some people also don’t
want to purchase new umbrella because they already have it at home. They don’t want their
house to be full of cheap umbrellas just because they need to buy every time the emergency
occurs.
Our service has a lot of features that help to ease the users. The renting process is easy
and convenient. Customers can install our app that is available on google and apple store. Or
they can search up for our website to know where the location of our machines. Customers can
easily scan the QR Code displayed, and they will need to fill in their personal information, such
as Name, telephone number and email. They will need to provide their banking information.
The rate will appear on the screen to inform the customer. The price for the rental is RM2 for
2 hours, RM4 for 4 hours, RM5 for 6 hours and there will also be one day which is 24 hours
rental for RM10. Deposit of RM2 is required to cover any damages. They will get the deposit
back in 3 to 5 working days through online banking to give time for the umbrella inspection.
The umbrella inspection will be done every week. They can choose what umbrella to use simply
by enter the number they desired, and it will unlock the umbrella for the customer. Customer
will only pay after returning the umbrella according to how many hours they rent. The banking

Page | 8
information provided earlier are for returning the deposit and for charging extra charges for
penalty in case they return the umbrella in a terrible condition. To return just simply press the
return button and key in the number and stick the umbrella back in it place.
The umbrella itself is installed with GPS tracking and Anti lost detection sensor. GPS
tracking help us for tracking down the umbrella in case that they didn’t return it or lost it. If
people contact our customer service about losing their umbrella, we will help to track them
down instead of making them pay the penalty. Another specialty about our umbrella is that it
has an automatic button to open the umbrella. The timer only starts when they open the
umbrella for the first time. The timer will state in the app or website. This is convenient for
the customers to look up how many hours they rent. The timer will stop only when they return
it back to the station.

2.2 Target Market

We are targeting in Kuala Lumpur for our first production. We are planning to start putting our
first machine at LRT Station Bukit Bintang and main entrance Pavilion Bukit Bintang. Another
8 machines will be spread out near big universities, popular public transport hubs and tourist

3.1 Business Service

Figure 5: Example of Umbrella Rental Machine

Figure 5 shows the exterior design of our Umbrella Rental Services. This external form of
Machine Umbrella Rental will attract the public to use these services as it can facilitate them
in the process of renting. The QR code available on the machine is for the tenants to fill in their
personal information to avoid anything untoward such as damage to the umbrella. The payment
methods we use are debit and cash. Nowadays, many people prefer cashless rather than carry
cash anywhere. So, we provide both services to facilitate the payment methods. The missing
umbrella will be identified if the place has been empty when the rental time has run out and it
will be charged for that.

3.2 Physical Store

Figure 6: example of Umbrella Rental Machine

Providing this umbrella rental service in public places even more so in the public
transport section is very helpful for many public transportation users because in Malaysia
which is a country with uncertain weather and needs umbrellas wherever we to go. Our
Umbrella rental machine is the exact opposite of Chinas’. We provide rental service. Since
Malaysia has a shocking weather; in the morning it can be sunny but then it can be raining.
Most people have been in this situation, where they didn’t bring an umbrella because they
thought it will be sunny the whole day then when it rains, they have no option rather than to be
wet. As a rental service, we don’t need to spend capital just to restock the umbrella. Malaysia
is a tourist places. In 2021, there were approximately 134.7 thousand tourist arrivals in
Malaysia. This is the opportunity for us because tourists will not buy a new umbrella, they will
prefer to rent.

Page | 13
Besides, public users don't have to spend a lot of money to spend on one umbrella to
use in a short time. With our services, we provide affordable prices for our umbrella rentals
which are RM1 for two hours, RM2 for four hours, RM4 for 6 hours and there will be one day
rental for RM10. For those with large families, it is certain that they will not carry an umbrella
for each one and of course they do not want to burden themselves with carrying an umbrella as
long as they are on vacation or walking the street. So, they can use this umbrella rental
according to how long they want to rent and return it where it should have been after use.

Furthermore, UMRENT This is also very useful for employees who drive cars to work.
When the rainy weather arrives and they park the vehicle very far away, they can temporarily
rent this umbrella to avoid getting wet. This proves that UMRENT is not only for public
transport users but also useful for everyone in need on that day. In a day it will certainly be hot
or rainy, so people will always use it if placed in an open place.
