Social Responsibility of Entrepreneurs
1. What is the difference between the minimum wage and the living wage? Do you think successful
companies are morally obliged to give wages above the minimum? Explain your answer.
The minimum wage is an amount set by law, whereas the living wage is determined by average
costs to live. The amount needed to provide a living wage depends on what is included in
the calculation. In my own perspective, companies which are successful are indeed morally obliged
to give wages above the minimun for the reason that employees drive your business forward, so if
their income impacts their stability in some way, that's going to impact their productivity. That
means their salary is directly linked to your company's success.
2. Television personalities, athletes, and other celebrities receive unimaginable fees. Meanwhile,
teachers receive very meager salaries. Do you think this is an injustice? Explain your position.
Athletes earn much more because of the TV viewership. On the contrary, teacher salaries
are paid by taxes. Ultimately, teachers and athletes are both paid by the average, everyday citizen.
On the other hand, for me, this is not an injustice because every profession has a different level of
fight.
3. Differentiate the stakeholder model of a corporation vs. corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Stakeholder model for a corporarion lists and describes those individuals and groups who will be
affected by (or affect) the company’s actions and asks, “What are their legitimate claims on the
business?” “What rights do they have with respect to the company’s actions?” and “What kind of
responsibilities and obligations can they justifiably impose on a particular business?” In a single
sentence, stakeholder theory affirms that those whose lives are touched by a corporation hold a right
and obligation to participate in directing it. Nevertheless, corporate social responsibility attaches a
responsibility directly to factory owners to dispose of the waste safely.
6. What can you say about businesses that have a padrino system? (Gaining promotion through
family affiliation or friendship)
Padrino system is definitely bad for business especially when the business person is confronted
with ethical issues. Additionally, the Padrino system cannot be made as a basis for ethical decisions
in business.
7. The prices for almost all commodities rose due to the pandemic, especially pork meat. What can you
say about the government setting the maximum price limit for pork meat? Is it fair for both the
consumer and the seller? Explain.
After the oversupply in 2020, the industry is now holding back supply amid increased demand,
causing the rise in prices. President Rodrigo Duterte issued Executive Order No. 124 on February 1,
imposing a 60-day price ceiling on pork at P270 per kilo for kasim or pigue (ham), P300 per kilo for
liempo (pork belly), and P160 per kilo for dressed chicken. Prior to this, the Department of
Agriculture (DA) released suggested retail prices of similar range. So far, these efforts have not
been helpful, since the current supply in wet markets had been produced at significantly higher
rates. The price ceiling, vendors said, is simply too low and they would be forced to sell at a great
loss. Moreover, this is not fair on both the consumers and sellers since there are massive losses in
times of pandemic.
8. Comment on how most fast-food chains produce food with an appearance far from its appetizing
advertisements. What type of direct misrepresentation was shown?
For me, there is no direct misrepresentation is shown. It is kind of like a person wearing make-up.
The appealing final photo is the “best representation” of the product while the product as purchased
is like your partner just after waking up without make-up.
9. Explain how there will be unfair competition for an ice cream franchise.
For me, there will be an unfair competition since soft serve ice cream is lighter and softer than
regular ice cream due to the fact that air is introduced during the freezing process. The air content,
or overrun, can range from 0 percent to 60 percent of the total product volume. Typically, soft serve
is cheaper than premium ice cream and is readily available at fast food chains. Most soft serve
comes from a powdered, fresh liquid, or ultra heat treated mix. The mix is added to the storage
chamber in the soft serve machine. When the draw valve pulls the product, the fresh mix combines
with the target air quality. Then, the mixture moves into the freezing chamber via gravity or a
pump. The soft serve is mixed, flash frozen, and stored until it is ready to be dispensed. The use of a
mixture and the process of serving the product from a machine means the dessert is produced
quickly. However, soft serve contains more preservatives and fillers than you’ll find in premium ice
cream. A soft serve base consists of milk, sugar, whey, and cream.

11. Will it be unethical if honor students are given an unlimited number of absences throughout the
semester? Explain.
Yes. It is unethical since frequent absences can have an impact on a student’s success in school. In
addition, absences affects the academic performances even if you are an honor student because you
cannot assure a hundred percent if you are able to know everything.
