Objectives

At the end of this experiment, the student should be able to:

1. Use melting points and boiling points in identifying unknown substances; an


2. Compare the volatility of the liquids.

1. Color is a physical property where it shows what light it deflects giving the substance a hue.
Density is the degree of compactness of a substance. Freezing point is the temperature where
an element or a substance freezes or solidifies.
2. The first equation H2O (l)  H2O (g) best describes water turning into gaseous steam.
Evaporation is a physical property therefore the water molecules don’t break apart and form
hydrogen and oxygen molecules.
3. We can use the melting point determination with dichlorobenzene and naphthalene because
pure substances such as naphthalene have a higher melting point than dichlorobenzene.
