1.

What to recite before going to sleep: Doa, Ayatul-Kursi, 3 Surahs with Qul

Doa

َّ ‫ ِب َما َت ْح َف ُظ ِب ِه عِ بَادَ َك‬،‫اح َف ْظ َها‬


َ‫الصالِحِين‬ َ ‫ َوِإنْ َأ ْر‬،‫ار َح ْم َها‬
ْ ‫س ْل َت َها َف‬ َ ‫ َفِإنْ َأ ْم‬،ُ‫ َو ِب َك َأ ْر َف ُعه‬،‫ض ْعتُ َج ْن ِبي‬
ْ ‫س ْكتَ َن ْفسِ ي َف‬ َ ‫اس ِم َك َر ِّبي َو‬
ْ ‫ِب‬
Bismika Rabbee wadha’tu janbee , wa bika ‘arfa’uhu, fa’in ‘amsakta nafsee farhamhaa, wa ‘in ‘arsaltahaa
fahfadhhaa, bimaa tahfadhu bihi ‘ibaadakas-saaliheen.

Translation

“In Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name I rise. If You should take my soul then have mercy
on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves”

Benefits

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said:

“When one of you goes to his bed, let him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he
does not know what came onto it after he left it. Then let him say: Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi wa bika
arfa’uhu wa in amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tuhfaz bihi ‘ibadika al-saalihin (In
Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name I rise. If You should take my soul then have mercy on
it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves).””. Narrated by
al-Bukhari (6320) and Muslim (2714).

Ayatul-Kursi

‫هّٰللا‬
َ‫ض َم ۡن َذا الَّذ ِۡى َي ۡش َف ُع عِ ۡند َٗۤه ِااَّل ِبا ِۡذن ِؕهٖ‌ َي ۡعلَ ُم َما َب ۡين‬ ‌ؕ ِ ‫ت َو َما فِى ااۡل َ ۡر‬ َّ ‫َن ۡو ٌؕ‌م لَ ٗه َما فِى‬
ِ ‫الس ٰم ٰو‬ ‫ـى ۡال َق ُّي ۡو ۚ ُم  اَل َت ۡا ُخ ُذ ٗه سِ َن ٌة َّواَل‬
ُّ ‫ُ اَل ۤ ا ِٰل َه ِااَّل ه َُو ۡال َح‬
ۡ ۡ ۡ ُ ۡ
‫ض َو َيــُئود ُٗه حِفظ ُه َما‌ۚ َو ه َُو ال َعل ُِّى ال َعظِ ي ُم‬ ۡ ‫اَل‬ ۚ ۡ َ
‌َ ‫ت َوا ر‬ ‫اۡل‬ ِ ‫الس ٰم ٰو‬ ۡ
َّ ‫ٓاء ۚ َوسِ َع ُكرسِ ُّي ُه‬
َ ‫ش‬ َ ‫ِااَّل بِ َما‬ ٖ‫ش ۡىءٍ ِّم ۡن عِ ۡلم ِۤه‬ َ ِ‫اَ ۡيد ِۡي ِهمۡ َو َما َخ ۡل َف ُه ۚمۡ‌ َواَل ُيح ِۡي ُط ۡونَ ب‬

Allaahu laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom, laa ta’khuthuhu sinatun wa laa nawm, lahu maa fis-
samaawaati wa maa fil-‘ardh, man thal-lathee yashfa’u ‘indahu ‘illaa bi’ithnihi, ya’lamu maa bayna
‘aydeehim wa maa khalfahum, wa laa yuheetoona bishay’im-min ‘ilmihi ‘illaa bimaa shaa’a, wasi’a
kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal’ardha, wa laa ya’ooduhu hifdhuhumaa, wa Huwal- ‘Aliyyul- ‘Adheem.

Benefits

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put me in charge of guarding the
collected zakah of Ramadan. Someone came and started to rummage in the food. I took hold of him and
said, I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).… He
[the one who came and rummaged in the food] said, When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursiy and
you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. The Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “He told you the truth even though he is a liar. That was a devil.”
Narrated by al-Bukhari (2311) .

3 Qul

1. Surah Ikhlas

‫ َولَ ْم َي ُكن َّل ُه ُكفُ ًوا َأ َح ٌد‬، ْ‫ لَ ْم َيلِدْ َولَ ْم ُيولَد‬،ُ‫الص َمد‬
َّ ‫ اللَّـ ُه‬،ٌ‫ ُقلْ ه َُو اللَّـ ُه َأ َحد‬.
Qul huwa Allahu ahad, Allahu assamad, Lam yalid walam yoolad, Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

2. Surah Falaq

َ ‫ش ِّ‌ر َحاسِ ٍد ِإ َذا َح‬


‫س َد‬ َ ‫ َومِن‬،ِ‫ت فِي ا ْل ُع َقد‬
ِ ‫ش ِّ‌ر ال َّن َّفا َثا‬ َ ‫ش ِّ‌ر َغاسِ ٍق ِإ َذا َو َق‬
َ ‫ َومِن‬،‫ب‬ ِّ ‫قُلْ َأ ُعو ُذ ِب َر‬.
َ ‫ مِن‬،‫‌ب ا ْل َفلَ ِق‬
َ ‫ َومِن‬، َ‫ش ِّ‌ر َما َخلَق‬

Qul a’aoothu birabbi alfalaq, Min sharri ma khalaq, Wamin sharri ghasiqin ithawaqab, Wamin sharri
annaffathatifee al’uqad, Wamin sharri hasidin itha hasad.

3. Surah Naas

ِ ‫ مِنَ ا ْل ِج َّن ِة َوال َّن‬،‫اس‬


‫اس‬ ِ ‫ُور ال َّن‬
‌ِ ‫صد‬ ُ ‫ الَّذِي ُي َو ْس ِو‬،‫اس‬
ُ ‫س فِي‬ ِ ‫اس ا ْل َخ َّن‬
ِ ‫ش ِّ‌ر ا ْل َو ْس َو‬ ِ ‫ ِإلَ ٰـ ِه ال َّن‬،‫اس‬
َ ‫ مِن‬،‫اس‬ ِ ‫ َملِكِ ال َّن‬،‫اس‬ ِّ ‫قُلْ َأ ُعو ُذ بِ َر‬.
ِ ‫‌ب ال َّن‬
Qul a’aoothu birabbi annas, Maliki annas, Ilahi annas, Min sharri alwaswasi alkhannas, Allathee
yuwaswisu fee sudoori annas, Mina aljinnati wannas.

Benefits

Ā’ishah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhā) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬retired to bed every night, he
would hold his hands together and then blow into them. He would recite [Sūrah al-Ikhlās, Sūrah al-Falaq
and Sūrah al-Nās) ] into them. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting
with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. (Bukhārī 5017)

2. What to recite once we wake up


ُ ‫اَ ْل َح ْم ُد هَّلِل ِ الَّذي َأ ْح َيا َنا َب ْع َد َما َأ َما َت َنا َوِإلَ ْي ِه ال ُّن‬
‫شو ُر‬

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee ‘ahyaanaa ba’da maa ‘amaatanaa wa’ilayhin-nushoor.

Translation

“Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return”

Benefits
When the Prophet went to bed, he used to say, Allhumma bismika ahya wa amut. And when he got Up
in the mornings he used to say, Al hamdu li l-lahi al-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilaihi-nnushur.

(Sahih Bukhari 7394)

This Hadith illustrate the importance of expressing gratitude and praise to Allah, and they emphasize the
idea that such expressions of gratitude can have a positive impact on one’s life and spiritual well-being.

3. Doa to be recited when entering/exiting toilet, & relieving oneself

When Entering Toilet

ِ ‫اللَّ ُهـ َّم ِإ ِّني َأ ُعـو ُذ ِبـ َك مِـنَ ا ْل ُخـ ْب‬.


ِ ‫ث َوا ْل َخ َباِئ‬
‫ث‬

Allahumma innee aAAoothu bika minal-khubthi wal-khaba-ith

Translation

“Allaah, I seek refuge with You from evil and from the male and female devils”

Benefits

Abu Dawood (6) and Ibn Maajah (296) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) said

“These toilets are visited (by jinn), so when any one of you goes to the toilet, let him say,
‘Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from
evil and from the male and female devils).’” (Saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 241).

On Leaving Toilet

َ ‫ا ْل َح ْم ُد هَّلِل ِ الَّذِي َأ ْذه‬


‫َب َع ِّني اَأْل َذى َو َعا َفانِي‬

Alhamdulillah alladhi adhaba ‘anni al-adha wa ‘afanee.”

Translation

“All praise is due to Allah, who has removed harm from me and granted me wellness.”

Benefits

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say upon leaving the
washroom, “All praise is due to Allah, who has removed harm from me and granted me wellness.”

4. Sunnah Way of Putting on Clothes and Dua to be recited

Start by the right side upon wearing clothes. The prophet – peace be upon him – said: (if you wear
clothes start with the right side) narrated by at-termithi, abu dawood, ibn majah, and it is authentic.

(Upon taking off the clothes, start with the left side then the right)

Dua to be recited

‫وب) َو َر َز َقنِي ِه مِنْ َغ ْي ِر َح ْو ٍل ِم ِّني َواَل قُ َّو ٍة‬


َ ‫سانِي َه َذا (ال َّث‬
َ ‫اَ ْل َحمْدْ هللِ الَّذِي َك‬
Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee kasaanee haathaa (aththawba) wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlim-minnee
wa laa quwwatin.

Translation

Praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I was
powerless myself and incapable.

Benefits

The Sunnah is to say, when putting on a garment: “Al-hamdu Lillah illadhi kasani hadha’th-thawba wa
razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah (Praise be to Allah Who has given me this garment to
wear and has provided it for me with no strength or power on my part).” And when he puts on a new
garment, he should say: “Allahumma anta kasawtanihi, as-aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma suni‘a lah, wa
a’udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni‘a lah (O Allah, You have clothed me with it. I ask you for its
good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of
that for which it was made).”(Al-Majmu‘ 4/647).

One who recites this when wearing clothes will have all his past (minor) sins forgiven.

Some more Benefits

 We will be following a Sunnah of our beloved Nabi ‫ﷺ‬.


 We will be making zikr of Allah Ta’aala
 We will be thanking Allah Ta’aala and as a result, Allah Ta’aala will give us more.
 We will be humbling ourselves before Allah Ta’aala and reminding ourselves that everything
comes from Allah Ta’aala alone.
