Unit 1.

Lesson D
An "online footprint" is the trail of information you leave about yourself online. It can include
your social network profile, photos, personal data, messages on forums that you or other people
post, etc.
Online footprints often include "digital dirt" – information that is inappropriate (= not
acceptable or not suitable) in some way.
1 If you obtain something, you get or achieve it.
2 If you withhold something (from someone), you keep it and don't give it to that person.
3 If people accuse you of (doing) something, they say you did something bad or wrong.
4 If you promote something, you say it is a good thing.
5 If you deny (doing) something, you say you didn't do it.
6 If employers reject a job applicant, they don't want that person.
7 If you regret (doing) something, you are sorry that you did it.

I found the advice about blocking other people's comments the most useful. I had never thought
about that before, but other people's off-color jokes could reflect badly on you. Some people I
know are constantly doing that, and I find it very annoying.

In addition, I think it is probably a good idea to be careful about the people that you add as
friends to your social networking site. If you don't know someone really well, it might be better
not to have him or her as a friend. This is, in my opinion, one of the best ways of keeping your
online footprint "clean."
I hadn't really thought about limiting the people you add as friends. But it's probably a very good
idea. After all, you wouldn't give out your personal information to people you don't trust in real
life.

1 "I've been in my job for a month, and I feel I really fit in."
If you fit in with a group, you feel that you belong to the group, and that they accept you.
2 "Many employees think their personal emails at work are completely private. On the contrary,
their employers can read them."
On the contrary means "No, the opposite is true."
3 "A lot of companies are recruiting new employees."
If a company recruits employees, they hire them.
4 "One of my friends is constantly partying."
If someone is partying a lot, he or she is out having a good time .
5 "People often don’t behave the same way at work as they do when they’re out with friends."
To behave means to act or do things.

Q Is it fair for employers to check out job applicants online?

Example
Classmate's post
"I think it's fair for employers to check out job applicants online because it's very difficult to tell
what a candidate is really like from a résumé. So many résumés are professionally written, and
they tend to make every candidate look ideal. So if employers check out candidates online, they
may get a truer impression of someone. Also, employers can find out if a candidate is a good fit
for the company because you can often see someone's personal opinions online. So I think
employers should definitely check out job applicants online."
Sample comment 1
"That's a good point about the résumés. Candidates want to promote themselves, so a résumé
isn't always a complete picture of someone."
Sample comment 2
"I agree about the résumés. People often withhold information from them, so employers really
have to interview people to find out what they're like. However, employers should be able to get
enough information without checking applicants out online."
