CLASSIFICATION-
The most commonly used tiles in residential construction today are manufactured using
ceramic. Although cork, concrete, metal, glass and composite materials are used in making
tiles. They were made to replace coloured bricks, and are used as covering material on floor,
ceilings and roofs, the main purpose being decoration. Tiles are usually thin rectangular (or
square) pieces of ceramic.
Ceramic are porcelain tiles are economical are require less maintenance than natural stone
tiles can be used in bathrooms and kitchen because of their waterproof nature.
In contrast, Natural stones can be used in spaces where they are exposed to high amounts of
moisture, provided their porous surface is sealed using appropriate sealants.

PRODUCTION PROCESS-
PREPARATION OF CLAY- The selected clay is taken and free from any impurity such as
grit, pebbles, etc such clay is then pug mills. For high quality edges, a large amount of pure
water is added to crushed clay and it is mixed well into the tank. The mixture is then allowed
to stand quietly. Coarse heavy particles settle in the bottom of the tank. The fine particles are
taken into other bins and the water is allowed to dry.
MOULDING- The clay is placed in moulds that represent the type or shape the tile is to be
created. Moulding can be done with the help of wood moulds or mechanical means by a
potter’s wheel. Wood moulds should be made from well-spiced wood. The clay is presented
in such moulds. And when the soil is removed from the mould the edge are ready to dry.

DRYING- The edges, as they come out of the mould, lay flat on top of the appropriate
number. Thus different piles are formed. After 2 days, irregular (edges rare due to wrapping
is fixed with flat wood mallet). They are only lifted when the edges are hardened by hand.
The edges are undersides are switched. They are attached to the edge of the shape to dry for
about two days.
BURNING OF CERAMIC TILES- Tiles are then burnt in kilns. A typical kiln for
accommodating about 30000 to 40000 tiles. It is circular in shape and is protected by a shed.
A layer of tiles is laid flat on the rows of long. Burning is affected if firing wood is placed in.
Heat control is important to achieve good results.

RAW MATERIALS AND PROCUREMENT METHOD-

Ceramics have been produced in the world for thousands of years and used for walling and
flooring of many houses. It was so simple and weak at first, but further improved and
changed its processes and materials to improve its resistance and beauty. In ancient times,
ceramics were often made of clay, lime, and adhesives. But today, its raw materials have
been changed to increase its resistance, beauty, and water permeability. Certain, different raw
materials with different formulas are used between tiles, ceramics and slabs. The detailed
explanation and statement of all the raw materials with details and their required quality
review are not included in this article, and we will suffice with a brief selection of them for
your familiarity. Ceramic tiles include whitely, feldspar, calcite, illicit, talc, kaolinitic clay,
sand and dolomite. Each type of ceramic differs in the percentage used of their materials.
These resistances to impact, and water are effective, so much gives each of these ceramics a
special feature.
PORCELAIN TILES RAW MATERIALS-Before combining the raw materials, you must
choose and classify the raw materials according to the colour and design you want. Choosing
the right raw materials and their percentage should be calculated and checked at a very
beginning. After selecting the raw materials and collecting them, the raw materials are
charged into the giant mixer. During the mixing process, amount of water is added to them.
After that, ball gravel is added to the mix to help break the material into smaller particles. At
the end of this process, a sip is produced. The next step in making porcelain ceramics is to
add colour grains to the slip mixture. These seed are added to the slip in mixing at a very high
speed to produce colour bodies. After mixing the materials and colours, it is time to separate
the water added to our mixture. At this stage, the liquid is introduced into a device to
evaporate the water mixed the raw material by raising the temperature. This step continues
until our liquid mixture turns into a powder. To produce green tiles, the powdered materials
must be pressed by a strong pressing machine with a power of more than 7000 tones, so that
it becomes a coherent to obtain acceptable resistance and permeability of water.

WAYS TO HANDLE INDUSTRIAL WASTE-

In recent years scientific issues related to environmental preservation have acquired a great
importance and a major challenge to be met is the recycling of materials discarded by various
productive sectors. Due to the damage caused to the environment by technological

development through the disposal of waste, this study seeks to alternative raw materials in
the manufacture of ceramic tiles. Different industries wastes that are classified as non-
hazardous were selected: sludge from the crushing process of gneiss, sludge from the cutting
and polishing process of varvite, sludge from the process of filtration-clarification of potable
water and a clay also classified as waste. As it was generated, all waste was dried and
disaggregated in ball mills, and characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction,
differential thermal and gravimetric analysis, optical dilatometer, and particle size
distribution. The wastes proved to be good alternative raw materials and the corresponding
formulations were shown to be viable in the manufacture of ceramic tiles.
