presenting the new

lesson
Group Activity

Mechanics:

1. Each group shall form a circle.

2. There are 5 problems for this activity where they
have to simplify the following given into single
fractions. Each problem is to be answered in 1
minutes.
3. After the time allotment, the participants shall
pass the questionnaire to their right and so on
until they answer the 5th question.
4. Exchange papers for checking.
Subtract the following fractions
2 1 4 2
1. - 6. −
3 3 3 5
1 3 3 4
2. - 7. −
4 4 7 5
1 1 4 3
3. - 8. −
3 2 7 2
−7 1 1 3
4. −¿ 9. −
2 3 3 5
3 1 1 1
5. - 10. −
4 8 5 6
B. Establishing a
purpose for the lesson Motive Questions:
1. How did you solve the activity? (expected answer: by
applying the rule in subtraction of fraction with the same
denominator and with different denominator)
2. How to subtract fractions with the same denominator?
(expected answer: Direct subtract the numerator and
copy the denominator)
3. How about if the denominator is different?(expected
answer: finding its LCD
Note: Lead the students to the concept of “subtracting a
rational algebraic expression”
Like fractions, rational algebraic expression can also be
subtracted. The rule in subtracting a rational algebraic
expression is the same as in subtracting fraction.

C. Presenting examples Add the following rational algebraic expressions(Note: At the

of the new lesson right side are the expected answers)

1 3 −1
1. −
2y 2 y y
4x y 4 x− y
2. −

 How did you subtract the item 1 & 2? (expected

answer: direct subtract the numerator and copy
the denominator )
 How about item 3-5?(expected answer: by finding
its LCD)
 How did you obtain its LCD?(answer may vary)
D. Discussing new To subtract rational algebraic expressions follow the rule
concepts and in adding of fraction. That is;
practicing new skills  To subtract with the same denominator, direct
#1 subtract the new numerator and copy the
denominator.
 Simplify the result.
Example:
9 7 2
1. − =
3x 3 x 3 x
−13 x x−1 −13 x−( x−1)
2. − = =
x +5 x+ 5 x +5
−13 x −x+1 −14 x +1
=
x +5 x+ 5
Note: Teachers may give more examples for further
elaboration.
E. Discussing new To subtract with different denominator, find the LCD and
concepts and simplify the result.
practicing new skills Example:
#2 3 5
1. −
a b
Solution: LCD is ab
ab ( 3 ) ab ( 5 )

3 5 a b 3 b−5 a
− = =
a b ab ab
x−1 3 x +1
2. −
x x−1
Solution: LCD is X(x – 1)
x (x−1)( x−1) x( x−1)(3 x +1)
x−1 3 x +1 −⌈ ⌉
− = x x −1
x x−1
x ( x−1)
( x−1 )( x−1 ) −[ x(3 x +1) ] x 2−2 x+1−(3 x 2+ x)
