Lesson Plan

Teacher: Mr. Ian Niznik

Subject/Course: Science Code: SO 11000
Topic: Caring for domestic animals
Level: Grade 1 (15 students) Lesson Duration: 50 m
Date: 19.04.2021
+
Time: 14:20-15:10

Lesson Objectives:
Students use their knowledge on how to treat domestic animals and get familiar with ideas presented
by teacher. Students come up with their own ideas on how to treat their favourite animal under
teacher’s supervision.

Teaching Procedures:
Preparation-Warm Up :
1. Eliciting students knowledge on domestic animals:
- Teacher mimics (using body) one domestic animal (let’s say a cat) and have students guess what
animal he/she is mimicking. (1 min)
- Teacher asks the question to a few random students: What animals do you have at home? and write
down their answers on the board. (1 mins)
- Teacher explains that animals we keep at home (like the animals on the board) are called domestic
and elicit from students some more domestic animals and writes down their answers on the board. (2
mins)
- Basing on the words on the board teacher creates a survey on “your favourite animal” and asks
questions like; Who likes dogs? Who likes cats? Teachers writes down the number of their answers on
the board and when the activity is finished theacher sums up the results. (2 mins)

Engagement:
2. Presenting new ideas to students and eliciting their ideas which are connected to the ideas which are
presented:
- Teacher chooses one of the animals from the survey and have students answer what the animal needs
to live and how it should and shouldn’t be treated asking students questions like: Could we leave (e.g.)
a dog alone at home for ten days? Can we play with our dog at home or rather outside? Do we have to
walk our dog (explaining in body language what “walking a dog” is)? How do we feed (using body
language for the word “feed” explanation) our dog? (2 mins)
- Teacher set up a game for students dividing them in four teams and explains the game’s rules.
Teacher chooses (to give student an example) the most popular animal in the survey and asks random
students three questions related to its nature and the way we should take care of it and how we should
not treat it, like: (let’s say it was cat) Does cat like milk? Does cat like caressing? (again-using body
language to explaning the word) Could we put cat into a box and shake it? (2 mins)
- Teacher caries out the game asking the questions about the animals from the survey (students are
supposed to rise their hands to give their reply) and then switch to “important” domestic animals
students ddin’t mention for the survey. Points are added to the teams for every correct answer.
(6 mins)
- Teacher says there are only three more questions left (related to the game) then finishes the game and
sums up the score. (1 min)
- The winning team is prized by teacher verbally and the whole class applause. (1 min)
3. Presenting exemplary ideas related to the main topic (Caring for domestic animals):
- Students watch a short video about (let’s say) a little girl and her hamster. The video shows the way
hamsters should be treated. (2 mins)
- After watching video teacher asks students questions about the way the girl treated her hamster.
(2 min)
- One more video of this kind (e.g. about a pony and its little owner) and questions related to the way
the pony was treated in the video. (4 mins)

4. Producing their own ideas related to what they’ve been learnt:

- Teacher hands out paper sheets and crayons to students and ask them for writing down the name of
their favourite domestic animal in the upper right corner. Then teacher tells students to draw
themselves taking care of their favourite animal in the way they think would be best. Teacher says they
have 5 minutes for doing so. (2 mins)
- Students draw their pictures. (5 mins)
- Students present their works individually describing their drawings to the class. Teacher asks them
questions related to the way of treating the animals they drew slightly correcting them if needed (e.g. if
some student’s way of treating the animal was not really proper). (12 mins)

Plenary-Wrap Up:

5. Students listen to a song (audio-video with Karaoke style subtitles and at a relatively slow pace-
2minutes) about caring for domestic animals and try to learn it. Teacher leads them and encourages
them in making the effort of singing it. (5 mins)
