Lesson Class #: 4 Course Science 5

Title/Focus Static Electricity Mar 20, 2023

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

● Describe and demonstrate example activities that show that electricity and
magnetism are related:
○ demonstrate that electricity can be used
to create magnetism

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:

● Define static electricity and understand how it is different from current

electricity.
● Understand the concept of electric charges and the difference between positive
and negative charges.
● Identify common examples of static electricity in everyday life.
● Experiment with static electricity using different materials and observe the
effects.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Balloons
● Plastic combs
● Wool and fur cloth
● Slideshow
● Tissue paper
● Plastic spoon
● Straw
● Popsicle sticks
● Coin
● Paper clip
● Wood pencil
● Pen
● Aluminum Foil
● Plastic Wrap

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Preparation:

● Gather materials such as balloons, combs, tissue paper, aluminum cans, and
other small objects that can be used to demonstrate static electricity.
● Prepare a presentation, including visual aids and videos, to introduce and
explain the concept of static electricity.
● Set up a demonstration station with appropriate tools, such as a Van de Graaff
generator or an electroscope, to illustrate the properties of static electricity.
● Create a handout or worksheet with questions or activities for students to
complete during or after the lesson.
● Consider safety issues related to handling electrical equipment or conducting
experiments, and prepare accordingly.

Logistics:

● Start the lesson with a brief introduction to static electricity, using the
presentation and visual aids to explain the concept and its properties.
● Demonstrate how static electricity works using the objects you have gathered
and the demonstration station. Allow students to interact with the objects and
see the effects of static electricity.
● Provide opportunities for students to conduct their own experiments with static
electricity using the materials provided, or have them observe and analyze
demonstrations conducted by the teacher.
● Guide students through the handout or worksheet, and encourage them to
discuss and share their findings with the class.
● Conclude the lesson with a summary of the key concepts covered and a brief
discussion of the real-world applications of static electricity.
● Provide clear instructions for cleaning up the materials and equipment used
during the lesson, and make sure all materials are returned to their proper
place.

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
5-10 min

● Start the class by reviewing the concept of electricity and the

difference between current and static electricity.

Body Time

Slideshow 20 min

- Follow through the slideshow which will explain

charges, examples of static electricity.

Activity Activity: Static Electricity Experiments 30 min

Materials Needed:

● Balloons
● Plastic combs
● Wool and fur cloth
● Paper clip
● Wood pencil
● Pen
● Plastic spoon
● Coin
● Popsicle stick
● Straw
● Tissue paper
● Aluminum Foil
● Plastic Wrap

Procedure:

1. Divide the class into groups of 2-3 students.

2. Provide each group with the materials listed
above. Have them do their two hypothesis
before starting (reintroduce hypothesis)
3. Instruct the students to conduct experiments
with the materials to create static electricity and
observe its effects. (using the tissue paper as
what is being picked up,)
4. Encourage and explaining that why will rub each
object on three different materials (wool, fur,
and hair) to see what will work better
5. Have the students record their observations on
the worksheet
6. After the experiments, reconvene as a class and
have each group share their observations and
results with the rest of the class.
7. Discuss the practical applications of static
electricity and how it can be harnessed for use
in everyday life.

-Do walks around the class to help were needed

Extra Activity:

- For those who finish early, hand out this

crossword puzzle where you have to fill in the
blank with the words on the side of the
worksheet (have to write them in like on the
side of the key)
- See below

Conclusion Time
● Discuss the practical applications of static electricity, such as in 2 min
air purifiers or in printers.
● Have them hand in their worksheet and have their names on it

Assessment
● Summative: we will see how much understanding of instruction and effort was
put within this assignment
