Merriam-Webster defines materialism as “a preoccupation with or stress upon material

rather than intellectual or spiritual things.” Given that, many are saying that materialism
has, truly pervaded many of the world’s cultures today, some more than others. This
mindset has been ingrained not only on the minds of certain individuals, but on entire
societies. It drives our social behaviors including, but not limited to, our purchase
decisions, family structure, and the way that we build relationships.

1. From your perspective, can you say that our Filipino culture now is consumed by
materialism? Why/why not?
2. How is our Filipino family structure affected by materialism?
3. Think about your friends and family. From personal experience, how is materialism
influencing the way that you relate with these people in your life?
4. Is materialism a major cause of climate change? If so, how is it influencing this global
crisis that we are still facing now?
5. What solutions can you propose as a remedy to cultures swallowed by materialism
for them to overcome not only this mindset, but also the consequences caused by it?
