EXPERIMENT NO:08

COMPOUND PENDULUM

Aim:
To determine the time period and its natural frequency for given
compound pendulum. the radius of gyration ‘K’ of given compound
pendulum.

Theory:
To verify the relation
K + OG
T = 2π
g × OG
where T = period time sec
K = Radius of gyration about C.G cm
OG = Distance of the C.G of rod from support
L = Length of the bar , cm
g = 981→ cm/ sec2

DESCRIPTION OF THE SETUP

The compound pendulum consists of 16 mm diameter steel bar. The bar
is supported by the knife edge. It is possible to change the length of suspended
pendulum by supporting the bar in different holes.

PROCEDURE
1. Support the rod in any one of the holes
2. Note the length of suspended pendulum and to measure OG.
3. Allow the bar to oscillate and determine T by knowing the time for say
10 oscillations
4. Repeat the experiment with different length of suspension
5. Complete the observation table given below

Formula used:
1. Find ‘ K’ experimental from the relation

T(expt) = 2π ×
No. of oscillation
T =
Time taken in sec

Substitute for OG and T values for find K exp

K (theo) = (Standard formulae from Book)

For
Distance of the C.G of rod from support ,
OG = 37.5 →cm
Period time = T = 6.97 sec for 5 oscillation

T =Natural frequency
