EFFECT

GRADE 10 PHYSICS TEACHERS
As the observer
approaches the stationary
sound source, the relative
velocity is larger resulting
in an increase in the wave
crests reaching the
observer each second.

APPLICATIONS OF DOPPLER EFFECT
Radar Detectors use the doppler effect to
measure speed of baseballs and automobiles
(v-vd)
fd = fs
(v-vs)
Where:
fd – frequency received by the detector
vd – velocity of the detector
fs – frequency emitted by the source
v – velocity of the sound wave
vs – velocity of the sound source

REMEMBER
This equation applies when the source is moving,
when the observer is moving, and when both are
moving.
Be sure to define the coordinate system so that the
positive direction is from the source to the detector.
The sound waves will be approaching the detector
from the source, so the velocity of sound is always
positive.

PROBLEM #1
A trumpet player sounds C above middle C (524 Hz)
while travelling in a convertible at 24.6 m/s. If the car
is coming toward you, what frequency would you hear?
Assume that the temperature is 20ºC.
