Lesson Title: The Pigeon HAS to Go to School
Objective: (RI.K.3) (DOK 2) and (RI.K.1) (DOK 1)
Materials The Pigeon HAS to Go to School Book, computer, overhead
projector, printed papers, coloring supplies, and pencils.
Anticipatory Set Ask the students if they have heard of Mo Willems, the author of

- Ask what their favorite Mo Willems Book is (ex: Elephant and
Piggie, other Pigeon Books) have them answer why as well!
Go through ‘can do’ slide and ‘intro’ slide
Go over the “I Can” Statement and make sure they know that it
is something they will be able to do today.

about why the pigeon might not want to go to school and some

Options: draw what they want within the prompt, then they can
either draw a label of where their pigeon is or best guess spell a

Make sure everyone is sitting before continuing and allowing
them to start.
Tell them they may begin and to raise hand if they need help
Guided practice Work with students to write on their papers and help them think
of prompts.
Help them complete their labels or sentences for their pictures.
If they finish, they can start coloring their picture, if not they can
finish later during center time or recess.
Closure Have them put their pigeons in mailboxes and close the lesson
by repeating the I can statement- now you all can...
Build on it- tell them they can go to the library and check these
books out for themselves!

• This lesson plan should be filled out completely and with great detail. It
should be turned in BEFORE you teach the lesson.
• Make sure that your independent practice is connected to your objective.
• You should try to use technology somewhere in your lesson. I would highly
recommend using it in “the hook” on in the “input”
• Try to use a strategy for the check for understanding.
• Use citations if needed!
• Read the lesson plan rubric so you know exactly what my expectations are.
