Phonemic awareness
Lesson Plan

PA Core or Academic Standard(s): 1.1 PK.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken

words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Big Idea(s): Emerging reading involves the use of pictures, symbols, and text to gain
information and derive meaning.
Essential Questions: How do I acquire and practice pre-reading skills?
Objective/Performance Expectation: What will students know and be able to do as a
result of this lesson?
a. Recognize rhyming words.
b. Recognize when two or more words begin with the same sound (alliteration).
c. Count syllables in spoken words.
d. Isolate and pronounce initial sounds.
e. Segment single-syllable spoken words into phonemes.
I. PLANNING AND PREPARATION:
1. Briefly describe the students in your class, including those with special
needs. Explain how you will meet the needs of ALL learners
(Differentiated Instruction).
2. List the specific standard and expectations as outlined in the PA
Core/Academic Standards (SAS).
a. 1.1 PK.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables,
and sounds (phonemes)
3. Explain the psychological principles/theories you used in constructing this
lesson.
a. For this lesson, I used Dewey. He said you learn by doing and the
curriculum is based on the child’s interest. I took this into
consideration and I asked the student what her favorite animal was
and she said she loves Unicorns. So, for this lesson I got a Unicorn
book, that hopefully she will be excited about.
III. INSTRUCTION:
List Materials Needed
b. Crayons
c. A Unicorn Named Sparkle book
d. Color by beginning sound worksheet
4. Motivation Activities/Strategies:
How will you generate interest or focus your lesson for the students?
a. Before this lesson I will ask the student why her favorite animal is
a unicorn.
5. Prior Knowledge Activities/Strategies:

1
How will you activate prior knowledge, build background, or review previous lessons?
a. Before the lesson I will activate prior knowledge by asking her if
she has ever gone to the zoo and if so, what animals she’s seen
there. I then will read the cover of the book and ask her what she
thinks the book is going to be about.
6. Sequence of Lesson: What learning activities/strategies will you use to
engage the students in the learning? What will students do to use and
apply new concepts or skills (independent practice if relevant)? How will
you monitor and guide their performance? Include relevant vocabulary.
a. To begin lesson I will ask her if she has ever gone to the zoo and
what her favorite animal is.
b. I will then read the name of the book, and author.
c. I will then ask her what she thinks the book may be about.
d. I will then do a quick picture walk and stop on pages 4 and 7 and
ask her what she thinks maybe happening on those pages.
e. I will tell her that today we are working on the sounds of letters. I
will say the word “plant” and will ask her what letter the word
starts with.
f. I will then begin to read the book.
g. I will stop on a few pages and on specific words will sound out the
word count the syllables
h. On a few pages, I will have her read a word and ask her if she can
count the syllables in the word (teacher will help).
i. After reading the book I will ask her what her favorite part of the
book was.
j. I will then introduce the “letter, sound picture” worksheet.
k. I will have her choose a few colored crayons and will explain to
her how to do the activity.
l. I will say, if the picture starts with an “F” sound color that object
pink. I will continue to do this with each picture on the worksheet.
7. Level of Learning/Assessment Evidence
How will you know if students grasped the material? What
techniques/strategies will you use to assess learning (Bloom’s
Taxonomy)?
Identify what informal and/or formal assessments you will use to monitor
student learning. Also identify if this will be formative or summative.
a. During the story, I will be using informal assessment. I will be
asking the student small questions throughout the book. This will
be formative because it is during the lesson. At the end of the story
I will have the student do an interactive phonemic awareness
coloring activity which will be a formative assessment.
8. What will you do to bring closure to the lesson? How will you summarize
this lesson and preview the lesson that will follow?
a. To end this lesson, I will remind her why phonemic awareness is
important. I will ask her why she thinks it is important to be able to

read and spell words. I will tell her I am excited for next lesson and
to do more fun activities.
REFLECTION:

9. Describe what went well with the lesson, what didn’t go so well and what
you would do to improve your teaching effectiveness in the next lesson.
