CC.1.1.5.D

Skills Being Taught: understanding of new vocabulary words, how to use the vocabulary words
to make a prediction of what a story might be about, understanding the importance of key
details and the main idea of a story

Skills Already Taught: how to illustrate a picture based on a word, writing, reading, using
background knowledge to predict what a word might mean

Materials: Wilson Story “Ocean Depths Reveal Mammoth Tooth” (March 2013), writing utensils,
paper, vocabulary sheet

Student Grouping: This LS period consists of three eighth graders and one seventh grader who
are all on different reading/ELA levels and have a variety of different disabilities. For this activity
they work independently but share with and present in front of one another.

Assessment: I will be assessing the students’ prediction writing and their presentation or writing
after the story is told to them. They will be assessed on sentence structure and understanding
of content/information given to them through writing or presenting. This will show their level
and build on their skill of reading comprehension.

Accommodations: Blayk (extended time to write down information, longer wait time,
prompting, direct instructions), Mason (direct instruction, prompting), Kahmiyah (prompting,
direct instruction, longer wait time, extended time to write down information, less facts needed
written down), Lyle (prompting, direct instruction, longer wait time, extended time to write
down information, less facts needed written down).

This lesson is derived from the Wilson reading program and will be started by introducing and
pre teaching the vocabulary words for the story. This will be done by me writing and discussing
with the students the word, meaning, picture, and using it in a sentence. The students will copy
it down on their vocabulary sheet and this will be done for the first 4 words. (The other 2 words
will be done on day 2). After that, the students will be given a writing prompt and share their
thoughts through writing about what they think this story will be about based on the
vocabulary words. They will be prompted to share their predictions with their peers. I will make
my own prediction based on the vocab words, model, think out loud and then task them to do
the same. (Done on day 1) On day 2 the other 2 vocabulary words will be presented to the
class. Next, I will read the story to the students and every few sentences I will stop and write a
few important key points and illustrations on the board. The students will copy down the key
points and create their own drawings to further explain the information. Once the story is
finished, the students will take a few minutes to make sure they have all of the story’s
information down before choosing the option of presenting or writing a certain number of facts
about the story (each student will have a different number of facts needed based on their
accommodations). As the students write or present their facts, I will write down what each
student says to see if they meet the anticipated number of facts and show an understanding of
the story. Some students will be prompted for this by being asked specific questions about the
passage.
