6. Protection Functions

6.1 Over-current Protection with Complex Voltage Blocking

It has three-stage over-current protection which is subject to the criterion of complex voltage which
could be put into or put off in software in each stage. When any phase current is greater than its setting
value, the relay will operate after delay time.
Detecting the TV being in fault,the complex voltage criterion will be invalid automatically, but the
relevant over-current protection will be retained.
Complex voltage criterion:
The complex voltage criterion of over-current protection is :
U1  U1set or U 2  U 2 set
Where:
U1= positive-sequence voltage
U1set= the setting value of positive-sequence under voltage in complex voltage criterion
U2= negative-sequence voltage
U2set=the setting value of negative-sequence voltage in complex voltage criterion
The over-current protection block diagram is shown as below.

setting value(keeping 5s) and any line voltage is less than its setting value simultaneously, if the under
-voltage component has no return, the relay will operate after delay time.
When the CB is off, the protection will be blocked.

6.16 Loss of Excitation Protection

The major criterions are as follows:
1) Ufd(P),the regulated value varies with active power automatically ;
2) Low impedance ―Z<‖;
3) The rotor low voltage criterion: excitation voltage Ufd is whether less than working value.
a. The major criterion varying Ufd(P)
Principle: when there is the active power in generator, we could decide whether loss of excitation has
happened according to the lowest excitation voltage needed by the static stability limits. In normal
(including leading phase),the excitation voltage would not be less than that in no-load .Although Ufd(P)
criterion can reflect the low excitation intelligently, but the setting calculation is difficult .
Criterion Advantages: Ufd(P) criterion is working rapidly with reducing Ufd quickly at any early stage
of desynchronizing as a result of loss of excitation, the operating time of Ufd(P) is more 1 second
advanced than that of resistance criterion at static steady boundary, which is able to predict the above
situation to improve unit’s power outputted in working condition of voltage or transferring excitation
greatly . System network shows as follow:

Operation equation:
X d U fdo
U fd  K set ( Pc  Pt ) In formula : K set  ;

10
DCAP-5080S Back-up Protection Unit for Generator

U fd ——excitation voltage (unit :V);

P ——active power (unit :W);
U s2 ( X d  X q )
Pt  , generator salient power (unit :W);
2( X d  X st )( X q  X st )
X d  X d  X t  X s , the impedance reduced to terminal voltage;
U fd 0 ——no-load excitation voltage;
U s —— infinite bus voltage reduced to terminal voltage (unit: V)
Ed 0 —— no-load EMF;
K set ——setting factor.
b. Secondary criterion: Low excitation voltage with fixed regulated value
To ensure that the loss of excitation could operate properly in no-load and light load running (P<Pt),
or start outputs quickly when there have been the full and serious part of loss of excitation, the b criterion
could use as supplement of the above criterion. The operation equation:
U fd  U fd .set
In the formula, U fd . set :the regulated value of low energizing voltage (range: 0.2~0.8) U fd 0 ,
generally speaking : U fd . set =0.8 U fd 0 .
The relation is ―or‖ between the above both criterions, the relevant operation characteristic curve
fd U P
shows as follow at surface.
After loss of excitation and desynchronizing, U fd and U fd (P ) will operate and return
repeatedly and their outputs will shake, so the outputs of them should take a self-perpetuating measure to
prevent the above situation.
During rising speed before generator connecting network, it will utilize active power blocking in the
criterion (about 2% Sn) to ensure that the fixed low excitation voltage criterion would not generate
wrong operation.
After meeting the above both criterions, the relay will operate after delay time (0.1~0.2s).
If only the b criterion is effective, it should still take the blocking measure ―I<0.06In‖ to prevent the
loss of excitation generating wrong operation during connecting network and separation.
During system short-circuit and system oscillating due to serious interferences, the b criterion has
no wrong operation, the operation characteristic curve shows as the part of horizontal line in next figure

Ufd-P operation characteristic curve

c. Low impedance “Z<” criterion
The action zone of this protection is decided by reactance Xa and Xb:

11

 
Z  U ab / P I ab

-jXa

Action region

-jXb

d. Low three-phase voltage on the high-voltage side of transformer

After the generator has lost excitation, local network voltage will break up because the system voltage
becomes low on the high-voltage side of transformer probably, the relation is ―and‖ between this
criterion and the secondary criterion.
operation criterion: U t  U sset
U t .set : The regulated value of (system) voltage on the high-voltage side of transformer. General
speaking ,it could get (0.85~0.90) U n .

e. TV fault blocking
Detecting the TV being in fault, loss of excitation protection will be blocked.

Caution:
1) loss of excitation alarm
 It will accomplish judgment together with terminal voltage because the terminal voltage will
become low surely when the loss of excitation has happened. If the terminal voltage is normal,
it will recognize that excitation voltage has no fault .It is recommended that the loss of
excitation will give an alarm when the terminal voltage is not less than 1.05Un.
 Since excitation voltage will fluctuate, Ufd has to take a self-perpetuating measure, namely, it
has the capable of memorizing, Ufd is 100ms at this time.
 It could add the criterion for active power blocking (about 2%Sn) because Ufd will fluctuate
before generator connecting network.
2) Loss of excitation protection
 It should consider the TV fault blocking criterion
 Uab>0.3Un;
 Considering the system is still symmetrical after loss of excitation, so it should only compute
phase A impedance.
 Note that the delay time of loss of excitation can not be less than that of accelerated protection
 When the criterions for low energizing voltage and system voltage are all out, there is only the
criterion of general apparent impedance at generator terminal.

 The complex voltage criterion will be invalid automatically, but the relevant over-current
protection will be retained,
 Under-voltage protections will be blocked.
 Reverse power over-current protection will be blocked.
 Loss of excitation protection will be blocked.

the control loop fault signal after 2s.
6.25 Four Programmable Logic Control Outputs
The 4 groups of inter-tripping have the programmable logic function at the scene and could be used in
various interlocks freely.
The inter-tripping that would actuate the output relay according to the change of state which the digital
input values inputted in the unit, locates in the submenu ―Set PLC‖ and details are as follows.
①Input mask: select the effective binary input signals from No.1(SI1) to No.8(SI8) which will
participate the logic control function when its relevant bit is set to logic high (1);
② Level mask: define the effective logic level of the binary input signals. When the state of the binary
input signals coincides with the corresponding level mask, the inter-tripping functional element will
issue an output.
③ Output type: ―0‖ stands for pulse mode, the output is an pulse output and the holding pulse width can
be set from 0s to 127s; ―1‖stands for level mode, the output is not a pulse and not holding.

6.26 Checking Synchronization and Checking No-voltage

The both could be modified independently, it could be performed by checking synchronization (checking
no-voltage) output contact being connected in series with CB closing circuit. During setting at factory,
the 8 outputs from TS1 to TS8 could be used as checking synchronization (checking no-voltage) output
contact which ought to be consistent with the normal closing relay on I/O board.
For example, suppose that TS8 is checking synchronization (checking no-voltage) output contact(the
relevant closing circuit references to the elementary drawing about checking synchronization and
checking no-voltage control circuit), when meeting closing condition of checking synchronization or
checking no-voltage permitted, the TS8 contact would be closed and allowed closing CB which means
that the TS8 is failure to actuate; otherwise, the output relay TS8 will actuate , so TS8 will be open to
forbid closing CB.
