Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the English Grade 9 Quarter 1 Lesson 3 MELCs Self-Directed
Learning Activity (SDLA) on Employing the Appropriate Communicative
Styles for Various Situations.

This Self-Directed Learning Activity (SDLA) is collaboratively designed, developed


and reviewed by Grade 9-AM English Teachers of Sta. Ana National High School to
assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set
by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, economic, and
health constraints in schooling especially during these New Normal days when
Covid19 crisis still poses a threat.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this MELCs
Self-Directed Learning Activity (SDLA). You also need to keep track of the
learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. You are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in this
SDLA. You are expected to revisit and follow the Curriculum Guide 2016 Edition for
G9 and aim to make sub-tasking and unpacking of the competencies enlisted for the
particular quarter in the event that this SDLA is inadequate to target the eight (8)
macro skills. Further, you can make use of the G9 textbook entitled A Journey
through Anglo-American Literature in probing lessons to your learners.

With the hope of bringing out the best in every student despite the physical
distance in learning, the teacher is deemed imbued still with passion in the
teaching-learning dimension even if the educational system has gone online-offline
blended ways of teaching modality.

This Self-Directed Learning Activity (SDLA) is designed to provide you with fun
and meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own
pace and time. You will be able to process the contents of the learning resource
while being an active learner.

This interactive learning resource has the following parts:

I. Activating Prior Knowledge where your knowledge in the previously


learned topics is stimulated by simple
recall presented through activities
II. Learning Inputs where new concepts of the topic are
presented through inputs of the
teacher-writer
III. Learning Activity Sequence where your learnings from the inputs
are tested and applied

In general, English 9 focuses on Anglo-American Literature. Hence, as a self-


directed and self-motivated learner, you have to familiarize yourself with the
contents of this SDLA while learning literary devices, stories, poems, dramas, plays
and grammar structures. At the end of every quarter, the learners shall have
mastered the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) and other eight
(8) macro skills categorized under the following competencies: Reading
Comprehension (RC), Listening Comprehension (LC), Viewing Comprehension (VC),
Vocabulary Development (V), Literature (LT), Writing and Composition (WC), Oral
Language and Fluency (F) and Grammar Awareness (G).

Hence, it is very important for you- learner in English 9 to develop self-learning


study preference as there will be no physical teaching-learning contact for the
moment until everything has become normal. The English teacher will facilitate
only through a very limited learning access- that particularly through official group
chat for certain section where the teacher could mentor the students via online
asynchronous instructions on certain activities for a particular lesson. The
subsequent activities are to be accomplished by learners within a time frame at
home. So it is but important for the learners and parents to understand these
blended type of teaching modality.

According to Martin Joos (1976), a linguist and German professor,
speech style refers to the form of language that the speaker utilized
which is characterized by the level of formality.

It is identified into five types: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and
intimate.

1. Frozen style
 Also known as fixed speech, it is the highest form of communicative
style which is often used in respectful situations or formal ceremonies
like Shakespearean plays.
Below is an example of this taken from Friar Lawrence (Act 2, Scene
6).
These violent delights have violent ends,
And in their triumph die; like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey
Is loathsome in his own deliciousness,
And in the taste confounds the appetite:
Therefore love moderately: long love doth so.

Additional example are the speeches delivered by the priest or the


authorized official during weddings, funerals, and more. It uses the
complex grammatical sentence structure and vocabulary that are only
known by experts in that field.
Ex.
Throughout this ceremony, bride and groom have vowed, in our
presence, to be loyal and loving towards each other.

You have formalized the existence of the bond between you with words
spoken and with the giving and receiving of rings.

Therefore, I may now pronounce you husband and wife.

Another example is the speech said by the police before interrogating


suspects for their crime. This is also known as Miranda Rights.
Ex.
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be
used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If
you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you
understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in
mind, do you wish to speak to me?”

The examples given above are considered to be frozen lines because
they are speeches that have been used a long time ago but are still
being applied up until the present.

2. Formal Style
 This type uses formal words and expressions and is mostly seen in
writing rather than speaking. It also disallows the use of ellipsis,
contractions, and qualifying modal adverbials. It uses formal words
and expressions.
Ex. job interview, business meeting, reporting, academic papers

3. Consultative Style
 The third level of language. It is basically unplanned speech since
the speaker uses the participation and feedback of the listener. The
speaker will supply background information, while again, the listener
participates continuously. Example for this are student talking to his
teacher, patient and doctor conversation and the likes.

4. Casual Style
 Also known as informal style, it is usually used between, friends, or
even insiders who have things to share. In this type, there is a free
and easy participation of both speaker and listener. Jargons are used
in this type of communication.
Jargon is a language by a particular group of people especially in
their work, and which most other people do not understand.
Below are some examples of jargons used in different areas.

Legal Jargons
Affiant the person who swears to the Notary Public that his/her
statement or documents are true
Affidavit  a document containing information the person swears to
be true. Usually sworn to in the presence of a Notary
Public
Appeal when a party to a court case asks a higher court to review
a judge’s decision from a lower court
Appellant the person who appeals the decision of a court
Appellee the other party to an appeal who has not requested the
review of the court’s decision
Bench term used to refer to judges or the court - example:
"Please approach the bench" refers to approaching the
judge
Civil Case any case that does not involve criminal charges

5. Intimate Style
 The last type is used in talks between two very close individuals. It is
described by an economy of words, with a high chance of nonverbal
communication. Like casual, there is also a free and easy
participation of both speaker and listener.

Notes to the Teacher

It is essential to emphasize the importance of teaching different


communicative styles to the students in order to bring
awareness of their own communication style when they are
relating to others. This can help them build strong relationships
and help get what they want in life without causing
unnecessary conflicts with others.
Teaching this would eventually lead you to meet jargons.
Jargon is a specialized set of terms and language that is used in
a particular context and setting. It is especially common to find
jargon in an industry, such as in law, medicine, academia, or
an art or sport. People who are not a part of this industry or
group may not be able to understand the jargon used, as the
words are either obscure terms or have different definitions
than the regular usage of the word. Jargon is used to provide
more efficient communication between members of a certain
group, though at times it can also be used to exclude others
who are not part of the group or to show one’s own belonging to
the group.

(job interview) and lastly picture B (friends hanging-out)

Possible answer:
Since you are a teenager, you would probably want to listen to picture B

things you both like is a situation relatable to you.
