CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

The perceptions on COVID-19 vaccine of the grade 12 students in Lutayan National

High School is very important as we conduct this research to develop their overall thoughts in

Covid vaccine . Nowadays virus is spread in our country not just here but all over the country

affected. As of now the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that to get vaccinated is the

way to lessen the spread of virus. People afraid to participate in vaccination, so we tend to

know the perceptions of grade 12 students to know what is the feeling? When you are

vaccinated, in that way people will be comfortable if they know the effectiveness of COVID-

19 vaccine. Students’ perceptions can motivates other students to participate in vaccination

program, that’s why their perceptions is very important to spread the fact about COVID-19

vaccine.

COVID19 virus is spreading all over the world, many people suffer from the effect of

Covid-19 such as quarantine, loss of jobs to other Filipino, in short the economic slows down

because of this pandemic(COVID 19). Also it can affect our Social life, like cancellation of

large-scale sports and tournaments which is make people feel sad, avoiding the national and

international travelling because some of us wants to go somewhere. Students schooling also

affected because they want to go to school to learn but the education system is slow down.

During Pandemic many graduated colleges want to take board exam ,the postponements of

exam is the one impact cause of virus (Abid et al, 2020).

Definition of Terms

This part is to clarify or defined what term is being use in this research.

Covid-19 vaccine- protein-based vaccines, which use harmless fragments of proteins or

protein shells that mimic the COVID-19 virus to safely generate an immune response. Viral

vector vaccines, which use a safe virus that cannot cause disease but serves as a platform to

produce coronavirus proteins to generate an immune response.

- in this study, it means the main topic on the research.

Grade 12 students- students enrolled in the last grade of the K-12 curriculum.

- are the respondents for our research.

Perceptions- is the mode of apprehending reality and experience through the senses, thus

enabling discernment of figure, form, language, behavior, and action. Individual perceptions

influences opinion, judgements, understanding of a situation or person meaning of an

experience and how one responds to a situation.

- A topic that we’re to find out or we need to collect from the students.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

What is COVID-19 vaccine?

COVID-19 vaccinations are used to get the body's immune system ready to fight the

virus. These vaccines are an important tool in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Everyone aged 5 and up should receive a free COVID-19 vaccination. People who are

pregnant or planning to get pregnant are included. COVID-19 vaccinations protect patients

against contracting the virus and from developing more serious symptoms if they do. The

SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes SARS, is "taught" to your body by these immunizations

(MedlinePlus - Health Information from the National Library of Medicine, 2022).

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 began, WHO has worked with countries and areas in

the Western Pacific Region on public health measures to slow or stop the virus’s spread. Safe

and effective vaccines, in combination with other measures, are an important tool for

protecting people against COVID-19, saving lives and reducing widespread social

disruption.WHO and partners are working with governments to facilitate equitable access to

and distribution of an initial allocation of vaccine as quickly as possible through the COVAX

Global Vaccine Facility and other mechanisms. WHO recommends that initial vaccination

should prioritize groups at highest risk of infection in the Western Pacific Region (Home,

2022).

Vaccines imitate the virus or bacteria that causes sickness and cause the body to

produce antibodies in response. Once a person is infected with the disease-causing virus or

bacteria, these antibodies will protect them.Vaccines differ in their composition and how they

trigger the immune response to produce antibodies. Antibodies defend the body against

germs and provide protection if a person is infected with a disease. Vaccines can be

inactivated, weakened, or dead copies of the virus or bacteria in whole or in part, or a genetic

product (like mRNA vaccines) that produces protein copies without causing

disease(Welcome to Department of Health Website | Department of Health Website, 2022)

HOW COULD COVID 19 VACCINE AFFECT THE WORLD?

To address the local demand for COVID-19 vaccines biopharmaceutical companies

are working across the industry and around the world. To get as many COVID-19 vaccine

shot into arms as feasible, companies have continued to ratchet up their efforts to procure

supplies uncover manufacturing efficiencies, and enhance manufacturing capacity through

collaborations in the United States and around the world. Airfinity forecasts the capacity to

produce more than 20 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2022. To reach this point,

biopharmaceutical manufacturers have entered into voluntary partnerships globally. Many

challenges remain to ensure vaccines reach all countries and are ready to administer

them(Van, 2022).

A surge in COVID-19 infections in Southeast Asia is costing lives and threatening to -

recovery from last year's severe recession, according to a new Asia Society report. Southeast

Asia demonstrated in 2020 that with lockdowns and other mobility and social distancing

6
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Division of Sultan Kudarat
LUTAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Tamnag, Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat

restrictions, it could keep the worst of the epidemic at away. Southeast Asia, on the other

hand, requires robust vaccination campaigns to go through the pandemic's acute phase, stay

on top ofextremely contagious emerging varieties, and keep economies open. Vaccine

shortages and - obstacles have held Southeast Asia back so far. Lower-income nations in

Southeast Asia will still require major external donor assistance, not just for vaccines, but

also to boost immunizations rates, overcome vaccine hesitancy, and manage the logistical

issues of the so-called "last mile" of delivery(Maude, 2021).

Asia has been a significant pillar in China's vaccine diplomacy plan because it has

gotten the most Chinese doses. Over 30 Asian countries have purchased or received donated

vaccines. With 125 million doses bought, Indonesia is one of the world's largest customers of

Sinovac vaccinations. According to China researcher Ian Chong of the National University of

Singapore, China's eagerness to sell or contribute vaccines is "an effort to redirect the

narrative away from the fact that infections were first found in Wuhan, and to portray that it's

a scientific powerhouse." Many Asian countries, particularly the poorer ones, welcomed the

Chinese vaccines because richer countries monopolized many of the early orders of other

vaccines. "The standard thinking was that 'some protection is better than no protection', even

though at the time efficacy data wasn't great," said Dr. Chong. Thailand, for example, had

hoped to get the bulk of its vaccines from a local firm owned by the king, but delays in

supply forced the government to look for other options after new Covid outbreaks this year.

Apart from domestically developed AstraZeneca vaccinations, it has had to rely on Sinovac's

vaccine for the time being because the Chinese company was one of the first to

deliver(Wong, 2021)

According to Manila News (2021). The project aided the country’s efforts to expand

vaccination across the country, strengthen the health system, and mitigate the pandemic’s

impact, particularly on the poor and most vulnerable. Aside from vaccines, the project funded

the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE), critical medical equipment (mechanical

ventilators, cardiac monitors, portable x-ray machines), laboratory equipment and test kits,

and ambulances. The project also funded the construction and repair of negative pressure

isolation rooms and quarantine facilities, as well as the national and subnational growth of

laboratory capacity for the prevention and preparation of new infectious diseases. It provided

funding for the renovation of the national reference laboratory, the Research Institute for

Tropical Medicine (RITM), as well as six sub-national and public health laboratories in

Baguio, Cebu, Davao, and Manila, as well as the construction and expansion of laboratory

capacity in priority regions lacking such facilities.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) supports the pediatric vaccination of

children aged 5-11 against Covid-19. The pandemic, it said, has adversely affected the

growth, mental health, learning, and health-seeking behaviors of children and their families

(Cervantes, 2022).

Local government units (LGUs) should make more efforts to vaccinate all older

persons, according to WHO Philippines. Only roughly a quarter of this vulnerable group has

received full vaccination, putting 6.4 million elderly people at risk of serious illness and

death. The threat is heightened by the possibility of an increase in COVID-19 cases following

confirmation of the more transmissible Delta variant’s dissemination. The World Health

Organization (WHO) Philippines has issued a warning about the low prevalence of COVID-

8

19 immunization among senior adults in various local government units (LGUs). Vaccination

of the elderly in the Philippines lags, with only about 25% fully vaccinated and about 35%

having received their first dose. The slow rollout leaves the Philippines vulnerable to its

hospitals being overwhelmed due to a surge in cases from the fast-spreading Delta variant

(Manila, 2021).

VACCINE ISSUES

Side Effects

COVID-19 immunization aids in the prevention of COVID-19 infection. Some people

have vaccine side effects, which are natural indicators that their bodies are developing

protective mechanisms. These side effects may limit their ability to do daily tasks, but they

should subside after a few days. There are no negative effects for some persons, and allergic

reactions are uncommon. Adverse reactions that could lead to a long-term health concern are

extremely rare after any immunization, including COVID-19. If an adverse reaction occurs, it

usually occurs within six weeks of getting the vaccination dose. As a result, during clinical

trials, the United States For a minimum of two months (eight weeks) after the final dose, the

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected data on each of the authorized COVID-19

vaccines. Even though COVID-19 vaccines are in use, the CDC, FDA, and other federal

organizations continue to monitor their safety (CDC. 2022, January 12).

Endurance/Expiration

Malawi will discard almost 16,000 doses of an AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the

African Union that had an expiration date of April 13 th. For the same reason, South Sudan

9
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Division of Sultan Kudarat
LUTAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Tamnag, Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat

wants to trash 59,000 doses. Meanwhile, South Africa has requested that The Serum Institute

of India replace a batch of one million dosages that arrived at the beginning of April and are

due to expire on April 13. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has

recommended governments to hold on to expired vaccine doses while it examines whether

they are still effective beyond their original expiration date, Malawi remains skeptical. Using

expired vaccines, according to Malawi’s Secretary of State for Health, Dr. Charles

Mwansambo, would add to the skepticism that has hindered vaccine adoption across Africa.

Vaccine and pharmaceutical expiration dates are particularly important to remember in

general. Some of the chemicals may become ineffective after that date, leaving patients

vulnerable to the sickness against which they were supposed to be protected, or the

ingredients themselves may become hazardous (Joi, 2021).

Safety

According to a report by GMA news tv on April 13, 2021. 37-year-old Cidney Rose

died of asthma after allegedly receiving the second dose of vaccine against COVID-19. We

cannot blame other people for not getting vaccinated because of its side effects and there is

no certainty of safety especially for those with contagious diseases. We always hear of people

dying due to vaccination, including a citizen in our area in the Philippines, according to his

family he was strong and not sick but when he got vaccinated he gradually weakened and

died as well.

A study about “Covid-19 Vaccination Perception and Attitude among Filipino

Mothers in Lucena Quezon City” stated that the Philippines, vaccine faith has dropped since

the Dengvaxia debacle. Causing a dilemma for the country’s COVID-19 vaccination program

[1,2]. With the imminent COVID-19 pandemic, identifying those who refuse vaccination,

their views on vaccinations, and the reasons for their refusal is critical. The magnitude of

their concerns (Domingo et al. 2021).

Foreign

A study about” Risk and Perceptions and Hesitancy toward Covid-19 vaccination

among Healthcare Workers and Staff at a Medical College in Nepal” that vaccines could be

the best option to prevent the disease from spreading, with more virulent mutant strains being

constantly identified. There are vaccine skeptics, for both H1N110 and COVID-19,11 who

can hinder vaccination by creating and spreading speculations. Nepal has initiated

vaccination of healthcare workers and frontliners with COVISHIELD vaccine from

Oxford/AstraZeneca. The efficacy of this vaccine is reported to be 63.09% against

symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Understanding healthcare workers’ perceptions of vaccine

safety can enable governments to improve vaccination rates ( Paudel et al.2021).

Another study from Deepak Subedi and many others stated that vaccination is now

the most effective COVID-19 prevention method available. However, its success is

contingent on worldwide vaccination accessibility and people’s desire to be vaccinated.

Vaccinated. As vaccination programs expand over the world, it’s critical to gauge public

opinion. To achieve the goal of widespread vaccination, people’s perceptions and willingness

to be vaccinated must change. The goal of this study was to learn about public perceptions of

COVID-19 vaccinations and their readiness to use them. In Nepal to be immunized This

cross-sectional online poll included 1196 citizens of the city of Nepal in August 2021; the

majority of survey participants were young individuals (18–47 years). With a degree from a

university COVID-19 was perceived by 64.5 percent (771/1196) of the participants. 68.6%

(820/1196) believe vaccines are safe and risk-free (Subedi et al.2021).

The study from Saudi Arabia stated that effective management of the spread of a

novel infectious disease, such as the COVID-19 virus can be achieved through influencing

people’s behavior to adopt preventive measures. The public’s perceptions and attitudes

towards the virus, governmental guidance and preventive measures were unknown in Saudi

Arabia (Alkhaldi et al. BMC Public Health 2021).

According to the study entitled “ Covid-19 Vaccine Perceptions and Differences by

Sex, Age, and Education in 1,367 Community Adults in Ontario”. COVID-19 is a global

epidemic, and vaccine reluctance may stymie immunization efforts. In a cross-sectional

survey of community adults in Ontario, researchers looked at desire to get a COVID-19

vaccine, reasons for willingness/unwillingness, and vaccine safety views (Syan SK, Gohari

MR, Levitt EE, Belisario K, Gillard J, DeJesus J and MacKillop J 2021).

A study by Bilal Mahmood Beg and etc. The coronavirus disease has become a global

pandemic, and it continues to wreak havoc on global health and the economy. The

development of vaccines may offer a potential eradication of COVID-19. This study

evaluated the general knowledge, attitude, and perception of COVID-19 vaccines in the

Pakistani population (Beg et al.2022).

The study is all about the miasmatic coronavirus disease 2019 has adversely affected

May 7, 2021. The mortality\rratio increased by 50% in worse affected countries, whereas it

was reduced by 5% in countries that observed strict lockdown measures. Recombinant

protein development is a long-term process. Whole inactivated and live attenuated vaccines

are specific for each infective agent, such as SARS--\rCOV-2. The whole inactivated virus

vaccine prepared by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products has gained approval from

China’s National Medical Products Agency. Majority of people in Pakistan came to know

about the COVID-19 pandemic through social media or electronic media. Numerous false

perceptions like infertility in females, hormonal changes and microchip\implantation in

humans were spread through such mediums. This study will focus on bridging the gap

between reality and false perception about the vaccine (Beg BM, Hussain T, Ahmad M, Areej

S,Majeed A, Rasheed MA, et al. 2022).

In this study explains that vaccines are effective and reliable public health

interventions against viral outbreaks and pandemics. However, hesitancy regarding the

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine is evident worldwide. Therefore, understanding

vaccination-related behavior is critical in expanding the vaccine coverage to fatten the

infection curve. This study explores the public perception regarding COVID-19 vaccination

and identifies factors associated with vaccine hesitancy among the general adult populations

in six Southeast Asian countries (Marzo et al.Tropical Medicine and Health 2022).
