TOPIC: SET THEORY

A set is a collection of well- defined object.

UNION OF A SET: This the combination of the elements of two or more set without repeating any
element e.g. if set A= {1, 2, 3, 4} and B= {2. 3, 5} set A union B written as AuB will be = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

INTERSECTION OF A SET: The elements that is common to two or more sets is called the intersection of
the set. If set A= {1, 3, 5, 7}, B= {2, 3, 6, 9}, A intersection B written as AnB will be = {3}

COMPLIMENT OF A SET: Elements in the universal set that is not in a particular set is called the
compliment of that set, if U= { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} and set A={ 1, 2, 3}, B={ 4, 5, 6}, then ‘A COMPLIMENT’
WRITTEN as Ac will be ={ 4, 5, 6, 7} and also ‘B COMPLIMENT’ WRITTEN as Bc will be = {1, 2, 3, 7}

EXAMPLES

IF U= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}, A= {2, 4, 8} B= {3, 5, 7} Find

A. AuB
B. BnA
C. AC
D. BC

A. AuB= { 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8}
B. BnA= { 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8}
C. AC ={1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9}
D. BC ={1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9}
