On-Line Self Assessment 4

A battery with an emf of 100 V and an internal resistance of 1.5 Ω is connected in

parallel to a DC generator of emf 120 V and an internal resistance of 1 Ω. Both of these
supply a load having a resistance of 10 Ω.

a. Draw the sketch of the battery, generator and the load.

b. Apply Kirchhoff’s laws to find the current through the battery, the generator and the
load.

c. Determine the potential difference across the load.

Considering loop ABEFA in a clockwise direction:

EMF’s = 100V -120V = -20V

Volt Drops = 1.5I1 – 1I2

1.5I1 – I2 = -20 ..................(1)

Considering loop BCDEB in a clockwise direction:

EMF’s = 120V
Volt Drops = 1I2 + 10I3

I2 + 10I3 = 120......................(2)

From Kirchhoff’s Current Law: I1 + I2 = I3

Equation (2) becomes:

I2 + 10(I1 + I2) = 120

10I1 + 11I2 = 120 ..................(2)
