Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the law of the sea and

Chinese perspective on the political, social, and economic aspect of the

Philippines as percieved by selected alumni of Sto. Niño Montessori of Academic

Excellence. The intent of the said study is also to give recommendations for the

citizen and the government on defending the sovereign rights and jurisdiction in

the West Philippine Sea.

E. Significance of the Study

This research can give further information and insights for readers intrigued by

the topic of analysis on the impact of the law of the sea and Chinese

perspective on the political, social, and economic aspect of the Philippines as

percieved by selected alumni of Sto. Niño Montessori of Academic Excellence.

Also to provide necessary information to enlighten people on the sovereign

rights of both countries over the disputed territories.

Specifically, the following may benefit from this research:

 TEENAGERS/STUDENTS - for teenagers to gain knowledge and interests

in issues related to territorial disputes between Philippines and China. Also

for them to be aware of the issues the country is facing in order to

improve critical thinking among their age.


 FUTURE RESEARCHERS – for future references whenever a study about

the West Philippine Sea dispute will be made. Thus research could also

help future researchers to have a broader perspective on how to tackle

the research they may conduct.

F. Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The research paper entitled, “Defending Sovereign Rights and Jurisdiction in

West Philippine Sea: An Analysis on the Impact of the Law of the Sea and

Chinese Perspective on the Political, Social, and Economic Aspect of the

Philippines as Perceived by Selected Alumni of Sto. Niño Montessori of Academic

Excellence” will focus on the impact of the Law of the Sea and the dispute

over West Philippine Sea to the relationship of Philippines and China. The

respondents will be selected 15 alumni of Sto. Niño Montessori of Academic

Excellence ranging from 15 – 19 years old.

G. Definitions of Terms

 Arbitral Tribunal - a jury of one or more adjudicators convened and

seated by arbitration to settle a dispute. The tribunal may consist of a

single arbitrator, or two or more arbitrators may be present, which may

include either a chairman or an umpire.


 Exclusive Economic Zone - A marine zone with special rights for the

exploration and extraction of marine resources, including the production of

energy from water and wind. Promoted by the United Nations Convention

on the Rule of the Sea of 1982.

 Maritime Space - includes routes of communication and circulation, such

as navigation routes, trans - oceanic canals, sheltered and isthmus -

bound waters. This is a field of inaccurate extension in which operations

are carried out, unique uses are allocated, and territories are specified.

 Sovereign - a title which is applied to the highest leader in various

categories. The word is borrowed from Old French souverain, which is

derived from the Latin word superānus, meaning "above".

 UNCLOS - is an acronym for the Convention for the Rule of the Sea of

the United Nations. The Convention is often referred to as the

Convention on the Law of the Sea or the Sea Treaty Laws a rule of the

sea, UNCLOS came into effect on 16 November 1982.
