EPT Oral Exam Procedure:

Start by assuring the individual in Spanish/English (whatever seems to put the interviewee at ease) that this is a conversation more than a test, that you are not looking for a specific right
answer, you just want to explore what you are able to talk about in English.

Use the questions on the sheet. Feel free to ask follow-up questions as appropriate (¨Why?¨ ¨And how old is your brother?¨).

Start with a question in the A1 category. If the interviewee answers easily at this level, proceed to the next level in the same line of questioning (moving horizontally across the page). When
the questions become difficult to understand and/or answer, move to the row below and ask a question at an easier level. For example, if the interviewee could not answer a B2 level
question, move to the line below and ask the A2 or B1 level question.

Repeat this process of moving across and down, asking as many questions as needed to complete an approximately 15-minute interview and to confidently select a level (A1 – C1).

During the interview, note in the question boxes if the interviewee answered the question successfully ( ), answered partially or somewhat successfully ( ), or could not answer ( X ). At
the bottom of the form, make notes on any details regarding characteristics of communication.

At the end of the interview, use your marks in the question boxes, the Characteristics of Communication descriptions, and your notes at the bottom to select the interviewee´s level (A1, A2,
A2+, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, C1).

It´s your choice if you wish to tell the interviewee the result, or tell them that the English department/Outbound Department will send the results. Return the form to the person who
coordinated the evaluation and let the participant know that they will hear from her about next steps.
