5 Proving Triangle Congruence by SSS Mathematician: ___________________

Notes Date: ________________ Period: ___
Read Sec. 5.5

What are the two ways you have learned to prove triangles congruent?

1) Definition of Congruent Triangles. 2) S.A.S.

 Theorem 5.8 Side – Side – Side (SSS) Congruence Theorem:

If three sides of one triangle are _______ to three sides of another triangle,

then the two triangles are _____ .

Ex 1: Given: ̅̅̅̅
𝐾𝐿 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑁𝐿, ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐾𝑀 ≅ ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑁𝑀

Prove: △KLM ≅ △NLM

STATEMENTS REASONS

Ex 2: What about SSA as a triangle congruence shortcut? Is ∆𝐶𝐵𝐷 ≅ ∆𝐶𝐵𝐴? Why or why not?
As we have seen in example 2, SSA does not generally work as a short cut for proving two triangles congruent.
But, it turns out that this short cut HL (that has SSA with a right angle) does work for a right triangle.

In a right triangle, the sides adjacent to the right angle are called the legs.
The side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse of the right triangle.

 Theorem 5.9 Hypotenuse-Leg (HL) Congruence Theorem:

If the ________________________ and leg of a right triangle are _______

to the hypotenuse and leg of another right triangle,

then to to triangles are ______ .

Ex 3: Given: B is the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅

𝐶𝐷, ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐵, ∠𝐶 and ∠𝐷 are right angles.
Prove: △ABC ≅ △EBD

STATEMENTS REASONS
