What I need to know?  The following trigonometric ratios can be written as

This module is written for Grade 9 students under modular
modality. The scope of this week module is:
MELC 1: Illustrate the six trigonometric ratios: sine, cosine, tangent,
secant, cosecant, and cotangent (M9GE-IVa-1)

Basic Trigonometry deals with triangles, specifically right

triangles. In the previous quarter we discussed proving similar
triangles that involves the different parts of right triangle. The figure
below illustrates the different parts of a right triangle.

 To easily remember the ratio of the six trigonometric ratios you

can use the mnemonic device SOH-CAH-TOA and CHO-SHA-
CAO

What is It?
In , the side opposite , right angle, is known as the
hypotenuse while the sides opposite angles B and A are called the legs.
The measure of the hypotenuse is denoted by “c”, the side
opposite is “a”, the side opposite is “b”. Using these
measurements of the sides of , the definitions of trigonometric
ratios of acute are as follows
B

c
a Example 1
Given , determine the six
C A trigonometric ratio of acute angles A and B
b

*Note:
 The hypotenuse is the longest side and is always opposite the
right angle.
 The opposite and adjacent sides refer to another angle, other than the
.
Example 2

Given , determine the six

trigonometric ratios of

Answer:

 Reference angle will help you

identify the position of the opposite side and the adjacent side of
the triangle. It is sometimes represented by the Greek letter
(theta)
 The most important trigonometric ratios are the sine ratio, cosine ratio
and tangent ratio.
