Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.

Example: PQRS
P Q
̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑄 ∥ ̅̅̅̅
𝑆𝑅 and ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑆 ∥ ̅̅̅̅
𝑄𝑅

S R
The following are the conditions which guarantee that a quadrilateral is a
parallelogram.
1. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of opposite sides are
congruent.
2. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of opposite angles are
congruent.
3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if one pair of opposite sides are both
parallel and congruent.
4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if the diagonals bisect each other.
5. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if the consecutive angles are
supplementary.

Illustrative Examples:

1.Given: ABCD. Find the measure of each side.

Opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent.

A 2x + 15
B

Y+7 2y-3

D 3x - 11 C

a) AB = DC b) AD = BC If x = 26, then AB = 2x + 15
2x + 15 = 3x -11 y + 7 = 2y – 3 = 2(26) + 15 = 67
-3x + 2x = -11 – 15 y -2y = -3 -7 DC = 3x - 11
-x = -26 - y = -10 = 3(26) -11 = 67
-1 -1 -1 -1 If y = 10, then AD = y + 7 = 10 +7 = 17
x = 26 y = 10 BC = 2y - 3
= 2(10) - 3 = 17

2.Given: EFGH is a parallelogram. If ∠G = 64⁰, find the measure of the other angles.
a) Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.
E F
m∠E = m∠G
m∠E = 64
or ∠E = 64⁰ 64⁰
H G

b) Consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary.

m∠E + m∠F = 180 m∠H = m∠F
64 + m∠F = 180 m∠H = 116
m∠F = 180 - 64 Thus, ∠H = 116⁰, ∠E = 64⁰ and ∠F= 116⁰.
m∠F = 116
or ∠F = 116⁰

3) Given: MATH is a parallelogram. Find the values of x and y.

m∠M = m∠T m∠H = m ∠A M A
2x⁰ 40⁰
2x = 140 4y = 40
2 2 4 4 4y⁰ 140⁰
X = 70 y = 10 H T

4.Given: LMNO is a parallelogram. Find the measure of the following sides.

The diagonals bisect each other.
L M
P
If OP = 15, then PM = 15
If LN = 20, then PN = 10
O N

Different Properties of Parallelogram

1. In a parallelogram, any two opposite sides are congruent.
2. In a parallelogram, any two opposite angles are congruent.
3. In a parallelogram, any two consecutive angles are supplementary.
4. The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other.
5. A diagonal of a parallelogram forms two congruent triangles.
