Unit 3: Lesson 2

Proving Triangles Congruent

Review Example 1: Triangle Congruence
Statement
A triangle has 6 parts, three sides and three angles.
If two triangles are congruent:
◦ All 3 pairs of corresponding SIDES are
◦ All 3 pairs of corresponding ANGLES are

To indicate that two triangles are congruent, we must write a triangle
congruence statement

Review: Congruent Triangles
If all the parts of one triangle are
congruent to all the corresponding parts of
the other triangle, then the triangles are
congruent.

Note: This method requires that 6 parts are congruent to 6 other parts in order
to prove that triangles are congruent.
There has to be a better way!

SSS Postulate (side, side, side)
If three sides of one triangle are congruent
to three sides of another triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.
◦ This means that all the rest of the parts are also
congruent to each other.

So far…
In order to prove that triangles are
congruent, all you need to prove is that all
3 sides of one triangle are congruent to all
3 sides of another. Or….

Prove that two sides of one triangle are

congruent to two sides of another as well
as the included angle in each triangle.
