3. ∆𝑅𝑆𝑇 ~∆𝐿𝑀𝐾

What’s New
Are there triangles similar or not?

1. 2.

What is It
In the above problems, you are two given triangles, and you need to tell whether they
are similar or not, but the measures of some of its parts (sides and/or angles) are not indicated,
what should you do?
The following postulate and theorems that you have proved and learned in the
previous module will help you in showing that the given triangles are similar.

AAA (Angle-Angle-Angle) SIMILARITY POSTULATE

If the corresponding angles of the two triangles are congruent, then the two triangles
are similar.

Is ∆𝐽𝐾𝐿 similar to ∆𝑀𝑁𝑂?

Since all pairs of corresponding angles are

congruent, then we can say that
.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

AA (Angle-Angle) SIMILARITY THEOREM
If two angles of one triangle are congruent to their corresponding angles in of
another triangle, then the two triangles are similar.

Let us apply this theorem in problems that involve similar triangles.

Are the triangles similar?

Solution: ∠𝑇 = 180° − (28 + 110)°

= 180° − 138°
∠𝑇 = 42°

∠𝑅 = ∠𝑉, ∠𝑇 = ∠𝐿

Since two pairs of corresponding angles are congruent, then you can say that
∆𝑅𝑌𝑇 ~∆𝑉𝑈𝐿 by AA Similarity Theorem.

Going back to problem # 1 in What’s New, since two pairs of corresponding angles
are congruent, then you can say that by AA Similarity Theorem, ∆𝑇𝑅𝑌~∆𝐿𝑈𝑉. This is true
since the third angle in each triangle measures 500.

You can find the unknown lengths using the proportion that exist between the sides of
similar triangles. You can also use similar triangles to prove that lengths of segments are
proportional.

Example 1. Given: 𝐴𝐵 ⊥ 𝐵𝐶, 𝐷𝐸 ⊥ 𝐵𝐶

Find 𝐴𝐷.

Solution: ∠𝐶 = ∠𝐶 Reflexive Property

∠𝐵 = ∠𝐷𝐸𝐶 ⊥ 𝑠 form = ∠𝑠
∆𝐴𝐵𝐶~∆𝐷𝐸𝐶
9 24
3
= 24−𝑥 Corresponding sides of similar ∆𝑠 are proportional.
9 (24 – x) = 24(3)
216 – 9x = 72
- 9x = - 144
x = 16 Thus, 𝐴𝐷 = 16.

There are two other similarity theorems that we can apply to show whether two
triangles are similar. They are related to two of the theorems for congruent triangles.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

SSS (Side-Side-Side) SIMILARITY THEOREM
If the sides of one triangle are proportional to the corresponding sides of another
triangle, then the triangles are similar.
D
SSS Similarity Theorem says, C
𝐴𝐶 𝐶𝐵 𝐴𝐵
If = = , then ∆𝐴𝐶𝐵 ~∆𝐹𝐷𝐸.

4 8 2 4
Find the ratios of corresponding sides.

𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 𝐴𝐶 2 A 10 C D 5 F

𝐷𝐸
= 𝐸𝐹
= 𝐷𝐹
=1

Since all pairs of corresponding sides are proportional, that is the scale factor is 1:2,
then you can say that ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 ~∆𝐷𝐸𝐹 by SSS Similarity Theorem.

Example 2. ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶~∆𝐷𝐸𝐹. Find DF if AB=18, BC=24, AC=30, DE=12 and EF=16.

𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝐶
Solution: 𝐷𝐸

12 𝑥
3 30 B 24 C E 16 F

2 𝑥
3x = 60
x = 20
Therefore, the length of DF is 20 units.

𝑈𝑉 9 3 𝑉𝑊 15 3

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Since the sides that include ∠𝑉 and ∠𝐿 are proportional and ∠𝑉 = ∠𝐿, we can
conclude that ∆𝑈𝑉𝑊 ~∆𝐾𝐿𝑀 by SAS Similarity Theorem.
Going back to problem # 2 in What’s New, Since two pairs of corresponding sides are
proportional, that is the scale factor is 1:4, and the included angles are congruent, then you
can say that .
Example 3. ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶~∆𝐷𝐸𝐹. Find EF if AB=36, BC=24, DE=48, m∠𝐵=50, and
m∠𝐸= 50.
A
𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 D
Solution: 𝐷𝐸
= 𝐸𝐹
36 24 36 48
= 500 500
48 𝑥
B 24 C E F
36x = 1152 x
x = 32
Therefore, the length of EF is 32 units.
Keep in mind that even theorems on SSS and SAS Similarities may remind us of the
SSS and SAS Postulate on congruent triangles, there is an important difference between the
pair of Similarity Theorems with the pair of Congruent Postulates. The SSS and SSS Similarity
Theorems require only that sides be proportional, not equal.
Example 4. The length of the sides of a triangle are 14, 8 and 4. Find the perimeter of a similar
triangle if the length of its shortest side is 12.
Solution: Let x = the length of one side of a triangle
y = the length of the longest side of the triangle
4 8 4 14
= =
12 𝑥 12 𝑦
4x = 96 4y = 168
x = 24 y = 42

Perimeter = 12 + 24 + 42
= 78 units
Example 5. On a level ground, a 5 feet person and a flagpole cast shadows of 10 feet and 60
feet respectively. What is the height of the flagpole?
Solution: Let x = the length of the flagpole
5 10
𝑥
= 60
300 = 10x
x = 30
Therefore, the height of the flagpole is 30 feet.
