Living in the IT Era

(Assignment #3)

Instruction: Answer the following questions.

1. Based on the discussions, how does SCOT and SST differ?

Basing on the discussion and to my research Social Construction of Technology generally

states that human action shapes the technology and not vice versa. The main concepts
of SCOT is generally based on interpretative flexibility, relevant social groups, design
flexibility, problems and conflicts and closure. Interpretative flexibility means how you
interpret a technological artifact. For example, a cell-phone might be highly beneficial for
an office employee while for a kid it might be an instrument of nuisance as he might get
addicted to gaming, internet, etc. In general terms what the humans need, want and act
will shape technology itself.

On the other hand, SST (Social Shaping of Technology) says that technology can be not
neutral which means it can be manipulated by anybody. According to this view technology
is based and shaped by societies dominating social, political, and economic values. What
it aims at understanding is if a technology is not determined by any initial pre-determined
logic, there might be various choices or paths that have different technological outcomes.

2. List down the social media sites you use. What do you use it for? How does
it affect your lives daily?

As a youth and student in this generation I am using a lot of social media sites. It can be
for my personal use, for education or just for having fun and releasing stress. But the
social media sites that I use the most are Google, Facebook, YouTube, Messenger, and
Twitter. This social media sites had help me a lot, Google serves as a substitute library
and research facility, I can research my lessons and activities through this, I can also
advance study and get the books or data that I need for free, it give me a lot of help and
boost when it comes to studying and learning. The same goes with YouTube, through this
social media site I can watch different videos that is connected to the lesson I want to
learn for me to better understand it and make the best out of it. I can also watch my
favorite video creators that gives me happiness and helps me to release stress. And for
Messenger, Facebook and Twitter. They are all for communication, I used them for
communicating with friends, classmates, family members and even your teachers. It is
made for us to stay updated and connected to our loved ones and even to the world we
live in. Generally this social media sites have a great effect on my life and my studies, it
basically makes a lot of things easier. Social media sites for me is a tool to create a world
where in communication, research, learning and bonding can be done a lot easier,
affordable and comfortable in its own way.

3. Technological change is done in multiple stages. Explain how computers
have evolved through the stages of technological change.

Computers has been a very big development when it comes to technology, it has been
part of the history of technology itself, this two components (Technology & Computer) has
been related for a very long time. Computers evolve from generation to generation while
the technology itself continue to advance. It is basically a built relationship, when
technology advance computers evolve to another generation, It is really fascinating. If we
recall computer has evolved from generation to generation, for us to better understand it
here is the summary of it.

 First Generation Computers (1940 to 1956):

Vacuum Tubes – used as circuitry
Magnetic drums - were used for memory or storage.
Punch cards and paper tape - were used for input and output
UNIVAC and ENIAC machines
 Second Generation Computers (1956 to 1963):
Transistors – used in circuitry instead of vacuum tubes
Transistor-driven machines - were the first computers to store instructions
into their memories – moving from magnetic drum to magnetic core
‘technology’.
Early Versions of COBOL and FORTRAN.
 Third Generation Computers (1964 to 1971)
By this phase, transistors were now being miniaturized and put on silicon
chips (called semiconductors).
These were the first computers where users interacted using keyboards and
monitors which interfaced with an operating system, a significant leap up
from the punch cards and printouts.
As a result of these advances which again made machines cheaper
and smaller, a new mass market of users emerged during the ‘60s.
 Fourth Generation Computers (1972 to 2010)
Intel. The chip-maker developed the Intel 4004 chip in 1971, which
positioned all computer components (CPU, memory, input/output controls)
onto a single chip. What filled a room in the 1940s now fit in the palm of the
hand.
The Intel chip housed thousands of integrated circuits.
The year 1981 saw the first ever computer (IBM) specifically designed for
home use and 1984 saw the McIntosh introduced by Apple.
The increased power of these small computers meant they could be linked,
creating networks. Which ultimately led to the development, birth and rapid
evolution of the Internet.
Other major advances during this period have been the Graphical User
Interface (GUI), the mouse and more recently the astounding advances in
laptop capability and hand-held devices.
 Fifth Generation Computers ( 2010 to Present )
Computer devices with artificial intelligence are still in development, but
some of these technologies are beginning to emerge and be used such as
Voice Recognition.
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a reality made possible by using parallel
processing and superconductors.
Leaning to the future, computers will be radically transformed again by
quantum computation, molecular and Nano technology.

As we can observe as the technology advances and have new discoveries as the time
goes by, it paves the way for the computer to improve also. As we all know as the years
goes by the computer generations improve because the creators have new ideas and
tools from technology advancement that serves as a tool for them to improve and create
a better version of computers. The same goes in vise versa, as the computer improves it
can be used to create or make new ideas for technology advancements. So in general
they have created a win-win situation where in they can both evolve and progress through
time. And in the present as we all know, have created a huge impact not just in our
everyday life but also in terms of education, work and research itself.
