Safety in the Laboratory: General Rules inside the Laboratory

INTRODUCTION

A strong set of overall laboratory safety rules is essential for avoiding disasters in the laboratory.
Safety rules are only effective when they are enforced and followed which is why strong laboratory
management is so important to a safe laboratory as well. Knowing the proper laboratory safety signs
and symbols and proper equipment rules as coupled with safety laboratory protocols are all important.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the experiment, each student will be able to:

 a) know and understand the safety precautions in the laboratory

b) Demonstrate proper laboratory decorum

c) Know and familiarize with the different rules on laboratory safety.

MATERIALS

            Laboratory Manual

            Laboratory Safety Notes

PROCEDURE

Identification of the Safety Precautions in the Laboratory

I. Proper Laboratory Decorum

  a) Identification of the different Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

      used inside the laboratory premises.

II. Laboratory Rules

  b) A review on the rules of Laboratory Safety

III. Post Laboratory Analysis

IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER FOR SAFETY IN THE LABORATORY

          I. Proper Laboratory Decorum

                 a)  The laboratory gown is required to be worn at all times while

inside the laboratory to serve as the primary layer of protection

                        against chemical spills.

               b) Safety goggles must be worn while inside the laboratory for eye

                    protection.

               c) Closed toe shoes or shoe cover must be worn.

               d) Long hair must be tied at the back.

               e) Loose jewelry. Pieces or accessories must be removed.

       II. Rules on Laboratory Safety

              a) During the experiment all bags and other personal belongings must be placed in bag racks. No
unnecessary items should be found in the working area.

               b) Cell phones must be switched to silent mode during laboratory hours.

              c) Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the laboratory.

               d) The experiment should be studied before actual performance. Be aware of the toxic and
hazardous reagents.

            e) Be familiar with the laboratory equipment.

           f) Report any accidents.

           g) Do not perform any unauthorized experiment.

         h) Treat all chemicals as hazardous.

          i)   Some chemicals are irritating, toxic, hazardous and poisonous.

             Handle them properly.

          j) read and label carefully before using any reagent.

          k) Do not return excess chemicals in the reagent bottles.

          l) Use a new pipette for each reagent.

          m) Never taste or smell the chemical reagents.

          n) Dispose solid wastes in the trash bin.

         o) In case of breakage, sweep the pieces and collect them with a dust

pan. Do not pick them up using your own hands.

         p) Do not place sharp objects in the laboratory gown.

IV. ANALYSIS

     a) Why is it necessary to know the laboratory rules and decorum?

We must learn the laboratory rules and decorum in order for us to maintain the neatness and the safety
of the people who are using the laboratory must know the precautionary measurements to prevent any
kind of accidents that may occur.

       b) Identify the PPE used in the laboratory and give the function for it.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT            FUNCTION / USE

Head and Scalp protection  Is to protect the head against galling objects and fixed
objects.

Respiratory protection Is for the safety of our respiratory system in which prevents
cases like infections on the lungs which is by the use of
filtered masks during work hours.

Hearing protection  For the protection of the ears in which this can help on
reducing the frequencies of sounds during in a working
environment.

Hand and Arm protection  It is for the protection of the arms and hands in prevention
of cuts, slices, heat, cold, burns, contamination and infection

Foot and Leg protection  For the protection of the legs and foot in prevention of
incidents like slipping, piercing, crushing, chemicals and also
chopping.

Body protection  Is for body protection in preventing cases like chemical
splashes, impacts or penetration, contaminated dust and
also for visibility during working hour.

Eye protection  Is for the protection of the eye which prevents incidents like
cuts, splashes of specific chemicals, sprays and impacts.

  c) What are some of the ill effects of not following laboratory safety

      protocols? Name a few.

There are consequences that might occur when not following the laboratory rules. Examples of this is
when a shrapnel damage occur, you might get diseases or infections when not following the safety
precautionary measurements of the laboratory rules. There can also be results of injury or also the
worst-case scenario is death when not following the laboratory safety rule.

VI. CONCLUSION

Following the rules and regulations is a must for us in order to maintain our safety and also the safety of
our surroundings. Consequences will occur if not following the rules intended for us to do. Preventing
bad cases that can occur when inside the laboratory is a good sign when doing experiments.
