BARBIE “GISELLE” DRESS

BARBIE “GISELLE” DRESS

DRESS
Notes:
1. The dress fits a 29 cm [11 ½ inch] Barbie (new model).
2. The dress is worked back and forth until the hips of the doll
(turning the work at the end of each row) then it is worked
in round.
3. The work starts from the lower edge of the yellow-orange
crop top and then go up to the neckline. When finished the
crop top, the work takes back from the lower edge of it
and, with dark grey colour, goes down for the rest of the
dress.
4. The first chain of the row/round doesn’t count as a single
crochet.
5. The three chains, at the beginning of the row/round, count
as a first double crochet.
6. At the end of each round make a slip stitch in the first
single crochet or in the third chain, if you’re working
double crochet.
Materials:
Yarn: Mercerized Egyptian cotton; weight per ball:
50 g [1,76 ounces], yardage per ball: 225 m [246 yds]
1 ball (50 g): Yellow-Orange
1 ball (50 g): Dark Grey
2 snap fasteners [diameter: 7 mm (0,27 inch)]
Gauge:
9 sc х 9 rows = 2,5 x 2,5 cm [1 x 1 inches]

Tools:
Suggested hook: 2 mm (B/1), scissors, wool needle for weaving ends, needle for sewing, thread for sewing snap
fasteners and flower (Yellow-Orange and Grey).

Abbreviations (US term):

dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
rep = repeat(ing)
sc inc = single crochet increase = work two single crochet into the same space
sc dec = single crochet decrease = Insert hook and draw up a loop in each of the next two stitches (three loops
are now on hook), hook yarn (this is the same as yo) and draw through all three loops on the hook.
sc blo = single crochet back loop only
hdc = half double crochet
tr = treble (or triple) crochet
dc inc = double crochet increase = work two double crochet into the same space

BARBIE “GISELLE” DRESS

dc dec = double crochet decrease = yarn over the hook (yo), insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, draw
the yarn through the stitch, yarn over and draw the yarn through the first 2 loops on the hook. Yarn
over the hook (yo), insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch,
yarn over, draw the yarn through the first 2 loops on the hook. Now there are 3 loops remaining on the
hook, yarn over and draw the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.

Every sc row/round begins with a chain (that doesn’t count as a sc)

Every dc row/round begins with three chains (that count as a dc)

Instructions

CROP TOP (crochet from the lower edge of it to the neckline)

Start with YELLOW-ORANGE Colour

ROW 1: Ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (40 sts)
ROW 2: 14 sc, 1 sc inc, 10 sc, 1 sc inc, 14 sc, turn (42 sts)
ROW 3: 15 sc, 1 sc inc, 10 sc, 1 sc inc, 15 sc, turn (44 sts)
ROW 4: 16 sc, 1 sc inc, 10 sc, 1 sc inc, 16 sc, turn (46 sts)
ROW 5: 8 sc, 1 sc dec, 8 sc, 1 sc dec, 6 sc, 1 sc dec, 8 sc, 1 sc dec, 8 sc, turn (42 sts)

ROW 10: 8 sc, ch 9, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in next sc, 14 sc, ch 9, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in next sc, 8 sc, turn (50 sts)
ROW 11 - 13: 50 sc, turn (50 sts)
ROW 14: 50 sc blo, turn (50 sts)

IMPORTANT N.1: Working single crochet back loop only (ROW 14) automatically create a set of stitches in relief.
These stitches are formed because when you crochet into the back loop, those front loops have to hang out in
the open. This creates a line that resembles a little ridge, that will be used to create the ruffles in the following
rows, as seen in the picture below.

ROW 16: 12 dc, 1 dc inc, 18 dc, 1 dc inc, 12 dc, turn (46 sts)

IMPORTANT N.2: In ROUND 17, work all double crochet as they occur, until you get to the last 4 dc. Approach
the two sides of the work and, in correspondence with the last four remaining double crochet, close them with
four double crochet. You pratically have to close, in round, the work by superimposing the last 4 double crochet,
to be closed together with 4 double crochet (1 dc for each dc). At this point you have only to work normally 42
dc, in the next dc (the first of next round) make a slip stitch, then restart with 42 dc per each round. in this way
the work is regularized, eliminating the small step that had been created when the work was closed in round.
From this point on, the work continues normally, in round, on a total of 42 dc.

ROUND 17 - 18: 42 dc (42 sts)

ROUND 19: 6 dc, 1 dc dec, 13 dc, 1 dc dec, 13 dc, 1 dc dec, 4 dc (39 sts)
ROUND 20: 39 dc (39 sts)

the third chain (13 ch2-spaces)
ROUND 22: Ch 1, 1 sc in the fist st, 1 sc in the first ch2-space, *ch 3, 1 sc in next ch2-space*, rep from * to * the
entire round, finish with 1 sl st in the first sc (13 ch3-spaces)
ROUND 23: Ch 5, 1 dc in the first ch3-space, *ch 2, 1 dc in next ch3-space*, rep from * to * the entire round,

entire round, finish with 1 sl st in the first sc (13 ch3-spaces)

Repeat ROUND 23 and ROUND 24 for other 2 times:

ROUND 25 and ROUND 27 = ROUND 23
ROUND 26 and ROUND 28 = ROUND 24

ROUND 29: Ch 1, 1 sc in the fist st, 1 sc in the first ch3-space, (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in the second ch3-
space, *1 sc in next ch3-space, (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in next ch3-space*, rep from * to * the
entire round, finish with 1 sl st in the first sc
