Standards:
SS.1.C.1 Explain the purpose of rules and laws in the school and community.

SS.1.CG.2.1 Explain the rights and responsibilities students have in the school community. 

 Students will identify the rights (e.g., treated with respect, physically safe learning
environment) and responsibilities (e.g., come to school on time, do not damage school
property) students have as members of their school community.
 Students will define rights as freedoms protected by laws in society and protected by
rules in the school community.
 Students will define responsibilities as things citizens should do to benefit the
community. 

LAFS.1.RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in text.

Objectives: The students will be able to identify the rights and responsibilities they have.

Why do we need rules and laws? By Jessica Pegis

Procedures:
Read the two nonfiction books in the materials section. Answer students’ questions as you read
the story.

Afterwards as a class you will create a chart on how to be a good citizen. In the middle of the
chart, you will draw a person and around it you will jot down what makes a good citizen.

Evaluation: Students will then be asked to create their own by drawing a picture of themselves
in the center. Around they will write what they do to continue to be a good citizen and
responsible student.
