TEST A Page 9 of 14
10. The people were played some new sounds once they were sleeping deeply.

11. In the morning, the people were told to listen and write at the same time.

12. Ben was confident from the beginning that he would benefit from doing the experiment.

13. Ben thinks there is more than one possible explanation for his dream.

14. When people take part in the experiment, they usually feel anxious afterwards.

15. The experiment could lead to a way of helping some sick people.

What are dreams made of? People have asked this question for thousands of years.
Nowa research centre in London is attempting to answer it. And, in the interests of science, I
agreed to help by spending a night sleeping with 19 other people I had never met before. We
were part of what the research centre calls the Dream Director, an experiment to find out
whether it is possible to control what people dream about. In it, people are played sounds
during their sleep to see if, and how, their dreams are influenced. The experiment was quite
simple. We lay down in specially-designed boxes, were given something to cover our eyes
and listened to a recording of children laughing and far-off trains. Our instructions were to
think calming thoughts suggested by the recording. This carried on for 20 minutes and then
there was silence and we went to sleep.
Our eye covers were able to measure our eye movements and so tell a computer when we
fell into deep or 'dreaming' sleep. As soon as this happened, the computer turned on the
speakers in the boxes and each person was sent a different series of natural sounds, such as
water, forest noises and large open spaces. In the morning, we got up and wrote down our
dreams. Our notes were collected and we only then found out what sounds had been played
to us.
I was quite surprised by the effect the experiment had on me. Normally, I don't sleep well
and have bad dreams about the stressful things in my life. But in the box, I slept well and
my dream took me on an enjoyable drive around the countryside in an open-top car, ending
in the middle of a forest. In the morning, I found out that this was extraordinarily close to
the sounds that played in my box, which were noises you hear in the forest and high in the
mountains. On the other hand, during the day, a friend had shown me photos of his holiday
in the mountains and maybe those had caused my dream.
What is the purpose of experiments like this? Dr Julia Price, head of the research team, told
me this: 'One of the most important things we have discovered so far is that in the morning,
when they wake up in their boxes, most people are happier and calmer than they generally
are. So, what we are finding out about directing people's dreams could be useful for doctors
trying to cure depressed people, for example.' The team's research project is not yet
complete but they are hopeful that their work will lead to real benefits in the future.

Part 3
Questions 16-20
Read the text and questions below.
For each question, blacken the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

When Vicky Harmiston was a child, her parents gave her and her brother Jamie the
freedom to decide what they did in their spare time. Vicky chose to do lots of different
sports. She was a good swimmer, and the coach at the swimming club she went to thought
she might be good enough to become a champion. But the club was a long way from her
home so it was difficult for her to fit in the training around her school work. When they
were teenagers, Jamie, who loved cycling, bought himself a special track-racing bike and
started taking part in competitions. Vicky thought it looked very exciting and decided to try
it for herself. She says that was the best decision she ever made. Soon she was cycling every
day and doing really well. The track was near her school, which meant it was no problem
for her to attend training sections after school every day.
Vicky went on to have a successful career in track-cycling and won several competitions.
Then, when she was 28, she retired from competitive cycling. Vicki told me: ‘For years I’d
loved winning competitions but I began to get a bit tired of the whole thing and when the
excitement stops, there's no point. Luckily, I went on to have a new career.’
Vicky got a job with a charity called CycleZone. ‘We work with young people who have
never enjoyed sports,” she says. ‘The first thing we do is teach them to ride a bike. We want
them to learn to believe in themselves and their own abilities. CycleZone does a great job,
and it gets young people together so they are part of a wider group.’
The charity uses celebrities to advertise the work they do. Vicky says, ‘I know some people
aren't sure whether the support of a celebrity is always positive for a charity, they say the
celebrities are only doing it to push themselves forward, which prevents the public from
seeing the real work of the charity. But if, famous singers and actors, for example, can help,
I think they should.’

16 When Vicki first started cycling

A She had a very good coach.
B Her parents gave her helpful advice.
C She could get to a race track easily.
D Her brother gave her a great bike.

17 Why does Vicki say she stopped cycle racing?

A She felt she was too old to do it.
B She was becoming bored with it.
C She had won everything she wanted.
D She was preparing for a new career.

18 What does the charity CycleZone do for young people?

A It teaches them how to do track racing.
B It supports those who have talent.
C It offers them the chance to try a variety of sports.
D It helps them become more confident.

19 According to Vicki, some people believe that celebrities can

TEST A Page 11 of 14
A take attention away from what the charity does.
B help people understand a charity’s work.
C make the public care less about a charity.
D encourage more people to become involved with a charity.

20 What would Vicky say on her blog?

A As a child, I always knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. But I never expected
to become so famous.
B If you join Cycle Zone, you will get to meet celebrities and learn how they have
become successful.
C Although track cycling is not the only sport I've been good at Comer I've never
regretted my choice of career.
D In my spare time I love going to schools and helping groups of children learn to ride
bikes.
