Materials
● A copy of the score for “Green Leaves Grew All Around.”
● A Piano, or Guitar.
● A computer and projector to display the lyrics.
Procedures
1. Students will keep a steady beat and listen as the instructor sings/models “Green
Leaves Grew All Around.”
2. Students will echo “Green Leaves Grew All Around” in small chunks modeled by the
instructor. Students will sing the chunks with accompaniment, but without an echo. The
instructor will repeat this process many times, gradually combining chunks, providing
enough repetition so that students will be able to sing accurate pitches, rhythms, and
lyrics. The instructor may teach any chunk with solfege if they deem it necessary.
3. Students will sing the song together. Students will then walk with the beat of the song
and sing. The instructor will suggest different ways to feel the beat including quarter
notes with a heavier step on beats 1 & 3.
4. The instructor will introduce the concept of strong and weak beats to the students. The
instructor will relate this to walking with a heavy shoe.
5. Students and the instructor will sit on the ground and the instructor will introduce the
concept of body percussion. Students will echo different body percussion rhythms

modeled by the instructor. Students will answer questions related to the rhythms about
strong and weak beats.
6. The instructor will teach a rhythm for students to play while singing.
7. The instructor will relate body percussion to playing a drum kit. The instructor will
introduce the concept of drum fills by modeling an example looping m. 6 with students
singing.
8. Students and the instructor will loop m. 6 and sing and try an improvised fill together
on every other measure.
9. Students will sing the song, looping m. 6, and individually improvising a 4-beat fill on
every other measure until everyone has tried, then finishing the song.
Follow up Lessons
Future lessons will include different lengths and mediums for improvisation including 2, 4, and 8
bars, and different percussion instruments. This lesson will also lay a foundation for improvising
with a jazz band in the future.
