Looking Back to your Lesson

From your previous lesson, you will use the concepts and skills you have learned in the
previous grades on ratio and proportion and deductive proof. A ratio is used to compare
two or more quantities. Quantities involved in ratio are the same kind so that ratio does not make
use of units. However, when quantities are of different kinds, the comparison of the quantities that
consider the units is called rate.

Introduction of the Topic

Lesson 1: It’s all about Proportion

The solution in the table that follows shows that corresponding quantities are proportional.
In short, they form a proportion because the ratios are equal.

Solution:
3 ft.: 36 in. = 4 ft. : 48 in. 3 4 3 4 1 1
? → ? → =
36 48 3(12) 4(12) 12 12

As previously mentioned, proportion defined as the equality of two ratios.

Lesson 2: Proportionality Theorems

6 9
̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅
In the figure below, 𝐴𝐶 𝐸𝐺 are divided proportionally because = .

So, any equivalent proportion is true.

𝑨𝑩 𝑬𝑭 𝑨𝑩 𝑬𝑭 𝑩𝑪 𝑭𝑮

𝑩𝑪 𝑭𝑮 𝑨𝑪 𝑬𝑮 𝑨𝑪 𝑬𝑮

Now let us consider proportional sides of a triangle.

Basic Proportionality Theorem

If a line is parallel to one side of a triangle and intersects the other two sides in distinct points, then
it divides the sides proportionaly.

𝑫𝑨 𝑬𝑪
̅̅̅̅ so
̅̅̅̅ is parallel to side 𝐴𝐶
In ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶, 𝐷𝐸 = 𝑩𝑬.

The converse of the above theorem is also true.

Converse of the Proportionality Theorem

If a line divides two sides of a triangle proportionally, then the line is parallel to the third side.

Corollary
If three parallel lines are cut by two transversals, then they divide the transversals proportionally.

In the accompanying figure, three parallel lines 𝒌, 𝒍 and 𝒎 are cut by to two transversals.
This results to the following proportions.

𝑨𝑩 𝑫𝑬 𝑨𝑪 𝑫𝑭 𝑨𝑩 𝑫𝑬

𝑩𝑪 𝑬𝑭 𝑩𝑪 𝑬𝑭 𝑨𝑪 𝑫𝑭

Example 2.3: If 𝐷𝐸 = 24, 𝐸𝐹 = 16 and 𝑋𝑍 = 30, then 𝑌𝑍 = ? .

Solution:

Step 1: Let 𝑎 = 𝑌𝑍 𝑎 = 𝑌𝑍

Addition Postulate)
24 + 16 30

Step 3: Substitute the value of 16 𝑎
each segment. 40 30

16 𝑎
Step 4: Apply the Cross – 40 𝑎 = 30 (16)
multiplication Property of 40 𝑎 = 480
Proportion
40 𝑎 = 480
Step 5: Solve for YZ 𝑎 = 12
Therefore, YZ = 12

Triangle Angle-Bisector Theorem

If a ray bisects an angle of a triangle, then it divides the opposite side into segments proportional to
the other two sides of the triangle.

In ∆ 𝐴𝐵𝐶, ray 𝐵𝐷 bisects ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 . Thus, results to

proportion;

Example 2.4: Given that ∆𝐸𝐹𝐺 with ∠1 ≅ ∠2. Answer the following.
𝐸𝐷
a. 𝐷𝐺
=
b. If 𝐸𝐷 = 6, 𝐷𝐺 = 8 and the perimeter of ∆𝐸𝐹𝐺
is 42, find 𝐸𝐹.
c. If 𝐸𝐷 = 5, 𝐷𝐺 = 7 and the perimeter of ∆𝐸𝐹𝐺
is 36, find 𝐹𝐺.

Solution:
𝐸𝐷 𝐸𝐹
a. =
𝐷𝐺 𝐹𝐺

b. If 𝐸𝐷 = 6, 𝐷𝐺 = 8 and the perimeter of ∆𝐸𝐹𝐺 is 42, find 𝐸𝐹.

Step 1: Given 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 ∆𝑬𝑭𝑮 = 42

42 = 𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 + 𝐸G

Since EG = ED+ DG, then EG = 14

42 = 𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 + 14
42 − 14 = 𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺
28 = 𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺
Let x = EF, so
𝟐𝟖 = 𝒙 + 𝑭𝑮
Therefore,
𝟐𝟖 − 𝒙 = 𝑭𝑮
Step 2: Form a proportion using the theorem on
Triangle Angle-Bisector theorem. 𝐸𝐷 𝐸𝐹
=
𝐷𝐺 𝐹𝐺
Step 3: Substitute the value of each segment. 6 𝑥
=
8 28 − 𝑥
3 𝑥
=
4 28 − 𝑥

Step 4: Apply the Cross – multiplication Property of 3(28 − 𝑥) = 4𝑥

Proportion 84 − 3𝑥 = 4𝑥

Step 5: Solve for EF 84 = 4𝑥 + 3𝑥

84 = 7𝑥
MATH 9 QUARTER 3 WEEK 5 P a g e 5 | 10
12 = 𝑥

Therefore, EF = 12

c. If 𝐸𝐷 = 5, 𝐷𝐺 = 7 and the perimeter of ∆𝐸𝐹𝐺 is 36, find 𝐹𝐺.

Step 1: Given 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 ∆𝑬𝑭𝑮 = 𝟑𝟔

𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 + 𝐸G = 36

Since EG = ED + DG, then EG = 12

𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 + 12 = 36
𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 = 36 − 12
𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 = 24
Let x = EF, so
𝒙 + 𝑭𝑮 = 𝟐𝟒
Therefore,
𝑭𝑮 = 𝟐𝟒 − 𝒙
Step 2: Form a proportion using the theorem on
Triangle Angle-Bisector theorem. 𝐸𝐷 𝐸𝐹
=
𝐷𝐺 𝐹𝐺
Step 3: Substitute the value of each segment. 5 𝑥
=
7 24 − 𝑥
Step 4: Apply the Cross – multiplication Property of 5(24 − 𝑥) = 7𝑥
Proportion 120 − 5𝑥 = 7𝑥

Step 5: Solve for FG 120 = 7𝑥 + 5𝑥

120 = 12𝑥
10 = 𝑥
Since 𝑭𝑮 = 𝟐𝟒 − 𝒙

Therefore, FG = 14
