Think about this!
A photo that is 8 cm wide
and 12 cm long is enlarged to a
poster that is 40 cm wide and 60
cm long.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Questions:
1. What is the ratio of the width of the photo to the width of the poster?
Answer: The ratio is 8 cm:40 cm or 1:5 in simplified form.
2. What is the ratio of the length of the photo to the length of the poster?
Answer: The ratio is 12 cm:60 cm or 1:5 in simplified form.
3. What did you observe with the two ratios? What do you think is the relationship
of the two ratios?
Answer: The two ratios are equal, and they are proportion.

What is It

A ratio is a comparison between, or a relating of, two different

things.
A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be
written in two ways: as two equal fractions, ; or using a colon, is read as
“”.

Example:
8 12
Determine whether the ratios 10 and 15 are in proportion.

Solutions:
Here are different methods to show that two ratios are proportion:
a. By cross-product:
8 12 8(15) = 12(10)
=
10 15
120 = 120
b. By simplifying ratios:
8 12 8 4∗2 4
= = =
10 15 10 5 ∗ 2 5
12 4 ∗ 3 4
= =
15 5 ∗ 3 5

c. By product of means and extremes:
8: 10 = 12: 15 8: 10 = 12: 15
Product of Means: 10*12 = 120
Product of Extremes: 8*15 = 120

Since the cross-product is equal, the simplest form of two ratios is equal, and
the product of means and extremes is equal, we can say that the two ratios are in
proportion.
