I. INTRODUCTION
This Learning Activity Sheet is about the probability of compound events. You will be able to
explore probability of independent events, dependent events and conditional probability.

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Define, illustrate and differentiate independent and dependent events.
2. Calculate the probability of independent and dependent events.
3. Illustrate and calculate conditional probability.
III. VOCABULARY LIST/CONCEPT

Compound event refer to events with more than one sample point/element. The total
probability of all the outcomes of a compound event is equal to 1.
Independent events refer to the occurrence of one event not affecting the probability of
another event.
Dependent events refer to occurring of one event affecting the probability of the other
event.
Conditional probability is defined as the likelihood of an event or outcome occurring, based
on the occurrence of a previous event or outcome.
Example 1: Rolling a die and flipping a coin are independent events because the probability of
any outcome/event for the die does not affect the probability of any outcome/event for the
coin.

What is the probability of rolling a “five” and getting a “head”?

Find the probability of the following (write your answers in percent (%):

11. P (has less than high school education)

12. P (earns over 20,000 and has less than high school education)

13. P (earns over 20,000 I has only high school education)

14. P (has high school education or less I earns over 20,000)

16. P (reading I male) 19. P (female I sports)

17. P (male I shopping) 20. P (hiking I male)

C. DOING
Solve the following problems. Show your solution as neatly as possible on your answer sheet.
1. Determine whether the events are independent or dependent, then find the probability.
In a game, find the probability of roll an even number on a number cube and the spin a spinner
numbered 1 through 5 and get an odd number.

2. Determine whether the events are independent or dependent, then find the probability.
An ace is drawn from a standard deck of 52 cards without replacement, then a second ace is
drawn.

3. An outdoor music festival is planned for Friday and Saturday. The probability of having rain on
Friday is 50%. If it rains on Friday, the probability of rain on Saturday is 70%, and if does not rain
on Friday, the probability of rain on Saturday is 40%. The organizer will postpone the festival if the
probability of rain on both days is at least 50%. Should the organizer postpone the festival?
4. Suppose that 60% of NCSHS students will be at random exposed to flu. If you are exposed and did not get a
flu vaccine, then the probability that you will get the flu virus (after being exposed) is 80%. If you did get a flu
vaccine, then the probability that you will get the flu (after being exposed) is 15%.
a) What is the probability that a person who got a flu vaccine will get the flu?
b) What is the probability that a person who did not get a flu vaccine will get the flu?

5. An urn contains 5 yellow balls and 5 green balls. One ball is picked at random and discarded without noticing
its color. What is the probability in getting a yellow ball in the second draw?

V. RUBRICS
a. Knowing & Understanding – 1-point each
b. Doing (5 point each)
